Mrs. Rufus has had a pot of chicken tortilla soup simmering all day. It's how she gets the kids to visit!

Growing up, at my parents' lil summer cottage at the NJ shore, my dad had the most amazing backyard garden (actually, was most of the backyard by the time he was done) ...... everything was organic, and amazing, and he grew so much stuff, he was a local legend, giving away extra to neighbors/friends because there's always be more. My mom would make spaghetti sauce with whatever he had, and she'd cook a big arsed pot of it, but.....BUT.....OH NO, it wasn't for that evening, of course - I'd come come home from the beach and the house would smell amazing, but we weren't having it that night (she believed in letting it sit for a day or two after cooking, and freezing some). Good times, those were....everything fresh off the vine/plant all summer long, that was his "hobby" - he had tiny irrigation tubes hooked to a timer on an outside faucet....amazing stuff. In our local town, they held a home grown contest, he had grown a 7 1/2 lb cucumber and a 2 1/2 lb tomato ....we had onions, cukes, strawberries, watermelons, honeydew melons, cantaloupes, herbs, peppers, lettuce, was like a farmer's market.......good times on LBI in Surf City NJ  I'll post a pic when I can find it. RIP, pops, miss ya

I'd be there, but I just cooked up another corned beef designated for a second week of Reuben sandwiches. Gotta use up the rye bread and swiss cheese doncha know.

    I am of Scots-Irish descent.

I don't want to culturally-appropriate the Italians by cooking their food.
    I'm funny that way.

So I'm just drinking beer tonight.

Ate until I was over stuffed, did the dishes put enough sauce in the freezer for another meal. Fed the cats and gave Monty his insulin shot. Now I'm kicked back noodling on my 335. A good afternoon.

That looks fantastic. Mine was good too. It gets darker as it simmers.
I have a weirdo aunt who puts a little cocoa in her sauce. Can’t choose your family.

Do you? Do you really have the biggest pot on the stove? Ha! I doubt it! Here, gaze in awe at the giantest pot on the stove!
So giant even I can't lift it, so giant ...
Anyway, it's obviously a lobster pot but I needed it to boil 10 pounds of corned beef. Turned out well

I’m more of a puttanesca guy myself but I respect the sauce hustle. I think the only time I eat pasta and don’t make the sauce myself is when I can find a good pesto ready made.

The ingredients make a lot of sense to me, since I use almost exactly the same thing. God that sounds good right now.

You give yourself away as being near Philly....”Sunday Gravy”!

Great Story. Your pops sounds like quite a guy! Nice spending summers at the Jersey Shore! I lived in/near Philadelphia for twenty years growing up- Ocean city, Cape May, and (of course:cool:) Wildwood were so much fun!
