I really hate it when a movie says "inspired by actual events" or "based on a true story" and they do something in the movie that totally didn't happen.

So, a movie could be made about the US civil war but they could have robots travel back in time to help the South win and that would be inspired by actual events? I mean, there WAS a US civil war.

So, I'm watching "The Aeronauts". THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN! The movie is a combination of many different balloon flights and the scientist character was minimally accurate but he was accompanied by a MAN and the balloon was coal fired. No one climbed up the side of the balloon to the top to free up the gas release mechanism.

After freeing up the gas release mechanism, the female character loses consciousness, falls and is caught by the long rope she tied around her waist and awakens hanging upside down. That would have broken her back. That's why the safety on the back of a harness is stitched in a way to be a shock absorber.

I thought it was a stupid movie and not worth the time I spent watching it.

I quit watching it after about 30 minutes. Too ridiculous.

I saw the Aeronauts, and thought "I hate it when movies suck."

The plot was a thin thread poorly woven into one overlong scene.

I know, sometimes I watch movies that suck so I can say, with actual knowledge, that they suck. "Well, did you actually WATCH the movie?" "Yes, I did. And it SUCKED.

"Based on a true story" = Not a true story.

I watched it because I was sick and sitting on the couch for a week and half so I just kept watching new releases. I kept watching this one because I kept expecting something to happen that made it worthwhile. Nothing did.

You do realize there’s a spoiler in your thread title ?

Because if you HATE something about the movie...

Well - guess I won’t see it now

    Warning!!!!!!!

    A technical 'spoiler' follows........

I think what probably irritated me the most about the movie (though there were plenty of smaller irritations throughout) was when the two main characters, supposedly people of science, launched their balloon to attempt an altitude record, and didn't even think to bring any cold weather gear. So there they sat, freezing to death in their summertime street clothes at what, 35,000+ feet?

And this after the female character had experienced similar extreme altitudes previously with her idiot father.

Never mind the lack of oxygen.

Yes, it was a turd of a film.

"Based on a true story " could be attached to anything.

Imagine how awesome it would have been in the end credits of T2 judgement day.

    Da da da na na

    "Based on a true story"
(Because juvenile delinquents in the 90s really did go to arcades occasionally...)

Thanks for the heads up. I hate investing time in a movie and regretting it.

That's not a spoiler. A spoiler is when you tell things about the movie as in what I did in the thread. I can say "I hated the Godfather" and that doesn't spoil the movie for you at all. It's an opinion that doesn't reveal anything about the movie.

Yeah, I wondered what the true events were in this film? That balloons exist?

I watched it for Eddy Redmayne, who I liked in the Fantastic Beasts movies.

I think I lasted 15-20 minutes, it is a terrible film.
Even if you forget the claim to be based on actual events and consider it a complete fantasy, it still sucks.

I watch movies expecting them to suck these days and i'm rarely let down.
If I want facts the last place I look is on a tv or movie screen.

I don't understand your complaint. That's why they use the "based on" and "inspired by" tags.

Well dang. Based on the subject matter I would have thought this might have been an interesting movie.
