As a possible topic for discussion: Would you bring any kind of guitar to any kind of gig?

I wouldn't bring just any guitar, but I would bring whatever guitar I felt most comfortably playing regardless of any style considerations. If I played blues best on a Flying V I would bring a Flying V guitar to a blues gig. Just like this guy . . .

Define modern country. Lol pop country? Not my thing. But there’s a LOT of modern guys kicking GREAT country. A Dallas buddy of mine is on a 2 month tour of Europe playing country (Joshua Ray Walker). But there’s tons more. Hit up “Gems on VHS” on YouTube. I found Lost Dog Street Band through them.

I’ve been thinking about a Charvel super Strat for a while now. I’m also loving on Jackson. I traded a Squier for a Jackson with a FLoyd. My first in thirty years. I still don’t care for them but man was that cheap guitar good! I traded it for a seven string Jackson and it’s also a fantastic guitar. I’d like to upgrade to a nicer 7 string but this one is so great..pickups aside. The stock pups are fine but not great.

I have easily played 90% of my gigs over the past 12 years on my Ibanez JS1200. And my band plays songs from a wide variety of genres at every gig- everything from ultra-clean tone for Grateful Dead and Steely Dan, to raging distortion for Green Day and Radiohead. It's a fantastic guitar to play and the PAF-style pickups on it are amazingly versatile and (with the coil tap feature) can do just about any sound I need. I'm a firm believer that guitar tone is much more a function of pedals, pickups, and amps than the guitar itself, and my Ibanez is a great platform for versatility.

And exactly ZERO people have ever commented to me that you can't play Jason Isbell on an Ibanez. If a particular guitar makes you FEEL a certain type of music more when you're playing, then sure, stick to that guitar. But if you like playing a guitar that doesn't fit within a perceived style of music- well, that's just too bad!

I LOVE those Charvels, by the way, and would get one in a heartbeat if the opportunity ever arose.

"Modern" is a reference to a style. Joshua is not modern country, he's just young. Maybe it will become the new "modern". That'd be great.

Charvel makes great guitars. And even though I can back up my love of Fender with my spending habits, Charvel is living proof that the 2nd $1,000 on any Fender guitar is the decal, not additional workmanship. I’d absolutely Rock it.

Country players in the 80s played 80s guitars, including super strats. That was 40 years ago. Play this charvel through a chorus pedal and a peavey special 130 and you've got a vintage country rig.

Here's an anecdotal answer to your question. Years ago, we were playing a gig in a seaside bar. My PS Custom was my main, and I had a Squier strat as my backup (as in, only there in case of string breakage). During our break between sets, a guy came up and was talking to our other guitarist. One of his comments was "tell your other guitar player to set down his Gibson for a while and play the Fender".

Somebody brought up an interesting question: How does the guitar make you feel? I will bring the Charvel to my next gig and find out.

I was half joking about the Joe Walsh thing of course.
But for a long time he was the coolest guitar player in my world. As a teenager in the 80's I got my first Tele because of seeing him in the Hotel California video (this was when Charvels were cool and Teles not).
And now, here I am with my blue flame/waterburst Charvel with the Floyd, the best playing guitar I've ever owned, hesitant to bring it to gigs, and never even having seen another one like it anywhere.
Then I read that Joe is guesting on the Colbert show so I check it out. I turn on the TV and there stands JOE WALSH PLAYING MY GUITAR!

Some guitars are cool right from the factory.

Some guitars are cool because of the modifications done to them.

Some guitars are cool because of who played them.

Some guitars are cool because of the history behind the particular model or even the particular instrument.

A cool person playing an uncool guitar does not make the person uncool.

Some guitars are not cool but sound cool, so they’re semi-cool.

An uncool person playing or owning a cool guitar would not make the uncool person cool. (Justin Bieber could play every guitar in Billy Gibbons’s and Keith Richards’s collections…the guitars would still be cool, but he would still be a douchebag).

Coolness is in the eye of the beholder.

A couple of years ago I bought a Charvel San Dimas ProMod, Floyd Rose, splitable Duncan humbuckers, in a blue flame finish. My first guitar with Floyd Rose after more than 35 years of playing guitar.

Cool guitar. I bet it sizzles. But I'm old and lazy. Can't be troubled with a Floyd Rose, locking nut, etc. Give me a Tele with a fat ole' neck. Tune it in the spring, check it again after Christmas.

There is just something about the headstock shape that I really dig. I don't know if it's just because that's what was hanging on the wall at guitar shops when I first started playing, but I've always like and wanted a Charvel and definitely gig with it if I had one.

Someone gave my bandmate one and he's just been hanging on to it to pass on to one of his kids if they ever show interest. I should ask him to bring it to our next practice. I bet it rips.
