I was thinking about something this morning over coffee and I am embarrassed to ask, “ Is a Mexican “Standard” Tele” the same as the term “ Baja”?

    No.
The Baja (50s and 60s type) were made in Mexico, but they were substantially different from the Standard.

Bajas were higher-end and cost a few hundred more than the Standard. Better pickups and hardware, with vintage-style specs.

Ensenada has from time to time, offered models to be sold below the "Standard" price point, and from time to time offered models (like the Paisley) that sell for more than the Bajas, but you're basically looking at the Bottom End and Top End lines in a bewildering selection of different models and sub-models coming out of Fender Mexico.

And of course the Standard is now superseded by the Player and the Baja is superseded also. It may not still be true, but there have been times when you could look at the Classifieds for Mexi-teles and the used Bajas would be priced at roughly TWICE what the used MIM Standards were priced at. That's pretty different.

Algun se podría decir que el estándar está por debajo de la Baja.

As funny as this can be, sometimes it seems there are so many sub-models (subgenres?) inside the fender product lines that it's tough to keep them straight.

Fender makes many models and variations of the Telecaster in Mexico ... it is confusing .

I go by color ... not model name ...

    I prefer maple over rosewood...

    Fat neck if available...

To my mind names have more to do with marketing strategy than identifying quality. For me other than pick ups, hardware and neck profile a Tele is a Tele is a Tele and as far as Fender goes they are all good stuff.

One of the most impressive shows I've seen was at a local festival with a French guy playing an off-the-rack Squier Tele. They both brought all that was required.

    Sybo,

I predict that if you were to try a Baja you would wind up with one.
    So many tone options:)

    Sí y no!
Stock, maybe but I bought my Standard, put in the PU's I liked(CS 51 noCaster set including orange drop), slammed a Wilkinson 3 saddle bridge on it and changed the pickguard, and then I had spent around baja pricing.
On the other side, the baja has the nicer neck thickness.
