I was working on pages for my comic and when I do so I always put on an eighties playlist and all of a sudden there was THIS song...

And I went "Oh this is different, I like it, who are these guys?"

And one thing I always do when finding a song I like is to look up a live version, to see if the band can walk the walk too. I wasn't disappointed with what I found.

Here's a solo version by the singer.

If you like that, check out Aimee Mann's solo stuff. It's great, if depressing!

Aimee Mann did the soundtrack for the movie Magnolia. It was brilliant, I thought.

She's a smart and deep songwriter. Great rhyme and meter. I am always amazed at her ability to invent new ways to talk about people, love and behavior.

She reminds me somewhat of Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde but also of Stevie Nicks.

Yep, Aimee Mann is the business. My favorite version of that song was when she was touring with her husband (Michael Penn, who was the single most influential musician for me early on) with a show they called Acoustic Vaudeville. It was a backing band, Mann, Penn, and Patton Oswalt, the comedian, before he became super-famous. Oswalt was the opener, and then he also did between-song patter that was absolutely hilarious. Toward the end of the show, they did Voices Carry and No Myth with comedic additions. For Voices Carry, Penn and Oswalt recited the angry boyfriend's speech from the original music video, in the middle of the song. Absolutely brilliant.

I'm going to guess that the OP is under the age of 40.

Well I'm 52 and I hadn't heard the original song, nor heard of the band. In fact I only heard of Aimee Mann in 1997 from her brilliant version of Nobody Does It Better on the David Arnold Bond Theme Project.

Maybe less that the OP is young, as that he's from Europe, where 'Til Tuesday and Mann weren't so well known?

I just turned 40 and yes that thing about Aimee Mann and Til Tuesday being not that well known in Europe (I'm Dutch) is also true.

Got really tired of that one back in the day, but a very good song. Got a lot of airplay, heavy rotation on MTV etc.

What I didn't know, was that Aimee Mann was the vocalist! D'oh!

Aimee Mann is an underground indie darling so to speak. I was catching up on Portlandia and she plays herself working as a cleaning lady in one episode.

That episode on Portlandia is awesome! She reminds me of a hip independent bookstore owner in a college town who is super smart and can hook you up with great things to read. I don't know her music all that well, but I like it when I hear it.

Aimee Mann is outstanding I try and catch her whenever she's in town.

Here's one of my favorites from Til Tuesday with Elvis Costello
