There are a lot of clams in New York. I like the Littlenecks. You can get 4 dozen for $10.
I don't really like the big Cherrystones or the Mahoganys.

You can purge them and get the sand/grit out .
I remember the first time I tried clams.....Howard Johnson's, on some road trip with the family. Man, I loved those things....deep fried heaven. Every HoJo had them on the menu. Gotta think that I was probably tasting more batter than clams.
I remember the fried clam rolls at HoJo. They couldn't be beat. Add some catsup ot tartar sauce. Finish off with some pistachio ice cream from their 28 flavors.
I remember the HoJo fried clams, every Friday night during the summer when I was a kid, we went on a trip and always went to HoJo for the all you can eat fried clam dinner, and a desert of pistachio ice cream. Just thinking about I can almost taste it..
Now I'm a fan of steamed clams and still love good fried clams (fresh whole bellies these days).
As for steamed, littlenecks, cherry stones and Ipswich piss clams..
and especially love some other kind of clam as well..

I bet you didn't have tube clams... Solid State clams have no flavor. Get ahold of some real tube clams then tell us what you think!
