Well, my rule is that you gotta know when you can do it and when you'd rather have the guy do it.

I had gfci plug die and when I replaced it, It didn't work. I did all the normal tests to figure it out and, well, I was confounded....

Soooo, I thought, I really want a dedicated 110 and 220 circuit for welding and big power tools AND I want a cutover switch for my generator (in prep for my house batteries etc)

and, I'd love to meet an electrician that I like who I could hire to rewire my cabin. (it is all 2 wire)

So, I hunted around, talked to friends and neighbors and he is coming today. He is doing the simple ones first so I can see what I think... if it works out, this could be a huge leap forward on my projects!

I love really good pros when they do stuff... inspiring!

I would do the same. I hate playing with lightning. Get it done right and live happily ever after.

sometimes I have to choose between building the infrastructure which uses the time I'd use to make things or have it done and use the time to make things....

I have a lot going, I need help, lets get someone who will zip through it.

The rounds to 200 mi distance makes it hard to combine our favorite contractors so I know that pain.

For local plumbers I feel set for life. We had water heater die the holiday weekend my wife came home from another cancer surgery. We needed a water heater. We had to pay part of the price to get the heater itself delivered right away but the small plumbing contractor figured out what was going on and was all of prompt, reasonable and kind. He could have billed 1.5 like everyone else. He handed the distributor guy a tip and told him to have his boss call him. You just can't forget good people and business like that.

For the cabin, I don't know what it's time to stop putting lipstick on a pig.

I suppose you could always just make a big mess out of the infrastructure you are trying to add so you could kill two birds with one stone. The government does that daily!

Sometimes it pays to pay someone else to do it, especially when it comes to dangerous crap like high volt electricity or cutting down trees, or strut spring compression.... ;) Crab and lobster is expensive for a reason and I gladly pay the $ to chow down, hommage and courtesy to those who risked life and limb to bring it to my table.

Electricity is one of the things that scares me. I've been nailed a few times and don't like it. I'd be calling someone too.

I'm with you. I've had enough professional training with electrical safety to know what I do know and more importantly what I don't know. I'll stand by and watch, thanks.;)

There are things I know I can do but how many trips to the hardware store, how much cursing, how much time involved & wasted is involved? And any repairs to damaged stuff counts for a lot of grief
My background is electronics but I DO NOT like playing with electricity.
A good pro is worth the money in my opinion.

Find a good techperson and stick with them. Better to pay for a task done well, then worry.

I hate messing with plumbing. The way I see it, get it wrong with electrickerry and there’s a buzz, spark, possible a bit of smoke, and it’s all over, one way or another. Screw up the gas and there’s a Big Bang and it’s all over. Mess up the water pipe and it squirts water, for ages, totally ruining everything you own.

    Good call!

My guy is my father in law, an electrical engineer. Very thankful to have him around. He's been really patient and taken a lot of time to explain electrical stuff to me. It's helped out on a lot of projects.

Not that I understood a word he said. I just mean that, listening to him explain things has helped me realize how very very important it is that I let someone else handle the electrical stuff ;)
