ya, they used to call it "The Popeye song" :p

It's funny, originally this was a rockin rendition of the old Elmore James tune "Shake Your Moneymaker", then we started having licensing/copyright concerns, so I took a notebook down to the corner bar, rewrote the lyrics (was going through divorce at the time ;)) and re-tracked the lyrics that same day.

That had to be around 15 years back

So the song is a response to your ex?

Is the phrase "I am what I am." a trademark?

well yeah, at the time, that's what inspired it yeah

Trademark, I have no idea, but that wouldn't likely apply in the sense of a phrase used in lyrics of a song.

And, you'll notice the Popeye phrase is "Yam" :)
