to play some Christmas music.
My wife, being Japanese, is lukewarm at best regarding Christmas, and my kids are in their teens now, and since we live an ocean away from the rest of my family, it’s basically “just us” in a country where Christmas is 1)not even a holiday, and 2)most closely associated with KFC and love hotels (not that that’s a bad thing!).
I had some dark Christmases in my late twenties, when I was single and depressed, and I once spent way more than I could afford on a splendid tree that just made me feel sadder because I was the only one looking at it.
I know there are guys here who have a strong aversion to the holiday, and I understand how that can be, but even in my deep skepticism about the commercialism and smarm that surrounds the holiday, I still gotta say that it holds a sentimental place in my heart, both for the memories of my own childhood and the ones of when my kids were little, and for the promise and optimism in the symbolism of the season.
That said, my middle kid started playing Christmas music in her room the other day, and I told her “too soon!”
She reckons any time after Halloween is fair game, but my rule is any time before Thanksgiving (US) is premature.
Posting this because it’s Sunday afternoon here and I’m debating putting on some Johnny Mathis

This is literally a desert island disc for me BTW.
