The Worlds tallest building is in the same large commercial complex and the Fireworks show just started. Strange over 100,000 people watching a Hotel burn down and a fireworks show at the same time.

Seems I recall those monstrous beauties being built with nearly slave labor wages...

Do you suppose they would skimp on the fire detection and protection equipment?

Sounds like 14 slight injuries and 1 death due to heart attack. They say the doors in the Hotel are state of the art self closing when a fire occurs.

Started with an explosion on 20th floor, hope it doesn't end up being terrorism.

Fire overwhelmed the sprinkler system. Others have said they heard a loud pop and the fire spread very fast. I'm thinking gas line exploded in the building? Just an educated guess.

I'm curious. Are you a gasfitter or a fireman?

They were discussing this on CNN a little while ago. Their "expert" said it appeared the fire spread so quickly because the exterior of the building was covered with a flammable aluminum/plastic composite material. Evidently a large number of buildings in Dubai are covered with a similar material and it has been a source of concern before.

What I wonder about is what is the technology in place for fighting a fire like this? Dropping fire retardant material from a helicopter? Certainly no ladder truck will reach the upper floors so...What is it?

Watching the Fireworks AND that must have been a very surreal experience.

True of all high rise buildings. This has been thought out.

There is a standpipe that the firefighters hook their pumper on to that runs, in many cases, up the stairwells. The stairwells are supposed to be designed to be safe from fire by being both fire retardant (built out of concrete) and sealed off from fire. There are very strict codes for how stairways are constructed for this very reason. The each floor should have a fire box with a hose for the firefighters to use.

This fire appears to be on the cladding of the building. I would assume the building was made of concrete so it's not gonna fall over from that fire. Let it burn itself out and clear the area.

Dude...that's what he's saying. A flammable exterior? Ridiculous! It was only luck that that were able to gain control. Why build a structure with a flammable skin?

My wild guess would be monstrous ego and stupidity. Or perhaps it's a feature.
