My current one is pretty great.

I tend to have a problem with authority (i know, hard to imagine, right?o_O), but this guy is so nice and non-condescending and knowlegable and helpful and truly a great leader, without overtly letting you see that he's wearing that hat, that I just gotta give him kudos, big-time.

    It's nice, for a change! :)

    Really great.

Ive had a few hand picked bosses by upper mgmt who didn’t know anything about the job I do or what our department entails. They were just kinda buddy buddy with mgmt.

I was thrilled when my current boss got hired to that position. She was with our team for a long time and gets us, goes to bat for us. Great feeling, I love it.

Pretty good overall. She's not a micromanager and pretty much leaves me alone to do my work without any interference. She's direct, which I like, so we've got a good relationship. Like anyone she could be better at some things, but not problematic at all.

I have worked for some real nightmares in the past. Even ended a career once to get away from a horrid manager.

Man, I feel for you. I worked for one and it was the most horrible two years of my life. In the end the only resolution was for me to quit.

I've got a good one right now. I've had some that were actually too hands-off to the point you wouldn't know what is going on.
I have had actively bad ones in the past too. Bad bosses are the main reason people leave jobs after short stints. People will say they want a new challenge or something like that, but it's the bad bosses that churn people.

    “I am not a micromanager...”

That’s what he says at least once a week. You know what that means.

Was that because you asked him to call you "Big Daddy" at work?

My boss is lazy. He’s a know it all. He blames all of his problems on me. He’s getting fat. He refuses to grow up and still acts like a teenager most of the time. I have irrefutable proof that he’s sleeping with my wife. He has overtly sabotaged my career on more than one occasion. He seems to delight in setting goals for me that are completely unrealistic. Some days I hate him so much I just wanna punch him in his stupid, smug, goofy looking face.

Other days, in spite of all his shortcomings, I just want to hug him and tell him everything is ok. He does have about a million super amazing stories about all these ridiculous and cool adventures he’s been on. His kids seem to not see everything that’s wrong with him and truly love him. He’s a pretty decent cook. And a not completely terrible guitar player. His dog freakin’ loves him, so he can’t be all bad.

Being self employed can be weird.

Dreadful. Just one example, somehow not even the worst: Asked us to non-anonymously quantify our charitable giving over the holidays in order to big up the division (and by extension, the boss). Given the current state of things, I let it ride, but I'll be requesting an exit interview when I leave.

    You should write.
I mean, nothing crazy, like the Next Great American Novel, but, like, a reflective coffee table book, or "Chicken Soup for the Guitarist's Soul" :)

I was self-employed for 20 years, up until when I retired.

So, yeah. Last boss, cool dude.

My previous 2 bosses were really bad. My current boss is a joy to work for.

ps. I retired in November 2019.
