I saw a fellow play this last night at an Irish jam. Looks to be a million years old. It's not.

Anyone wanna guess it's age? IMG_20191229_190416438.jpg

Alright so the quotes in the title have me confused. I guess I’ll wait to hear the age of the guitar, but maybe he plays the hell out of it. If not...a relic’d acoustic is breaking new ground; hadn’t heard/seen that before! Perhaps I just live in the TDP/ST bubble though.

Maybe I've used the term incorrectly. It's a "well used bought new guitar". Real earned wear there.

Please identify the owner. I would not want to accidentally loan this person my guitar.

A hole in the top of a new guitar may have an element of carelessness. Shall we believe the pick guard just fell off? Looks like wanton destruction to me.

I'm not sure they made those kinds of guitars without binding way back in the day.

They did have some where they painted the binding, but this looks like it was built without it.

All I know is I'm not letting that guy anywhere near any of my guitars! I would highly recommend a pickguard on his next guitar.

Owner told me he took off the guard. It’s a 7 year old X series Martin. Watching him play the Irish music I’m not sure how it got that way since he mostly played the 5th and 6th strings. Maybe his other repertoire is different. He is a big guy and this bar was hot as hell so there were some big sweat stains on it as well.

That hole seems to be pretty thick around the edges. More like the hole was punched or dug in it than worn away.

Maybe he just stores snacks in there and the rodents or his pet dog damaged the guitar while clawing to get to them.

He might also beat on it and scratch at it doing a skiffle type thing. The top appears to be collapsing so the braces are probably in bad shape too.

That's just bad technique; someone sawing at the strings (and finish) with their pick. I had a friend (terrible player) who was so heavy handed he'd gouge either the paint or the pickguard of any guitar he played in like five minutes. After he'd ruined a couple of pickguards on my guitars I told him he wasn't allowed to touch them anymore. Wouldn't be surprised if he was the owner of that one.

this guy was a semi pro player and while he was playing, *I* personally saw nothing that would cause wear like that. Don't know. He had a room *packed* to come see him. I don't get that kind of crowd so something must be working for him.

There was a local player who had a 000-x and a mid line Taylor concert, they weren’t that bad but both were well played after 4-5 years, 200+ nights will do that.
