How would you pick a new artist name?

Discussion in 'Band Wagon' started by thesamhill, May 4, 2021.

You have to pick a new name to release music. Which do you do?

  1. Stick as close to your name as possible? (e.g, "Sam Hill" becomes "Sam Hall")

  2. Go with a realistic but all-new name? (e.g. "Archibald Leach" becomes "Carey Grant")

  3. Go with a nickname that riffs on your real name? (e.g. "Joseph Cartagena" becomes "Fat Joe")

  4. Just pick a moniker you like? (e.g., "Prince," "Snoop Dogg,” "Bono," etc)

  5. Take a band name? (e.g., Trent Reznor becomes "Nine Inch Nails")

  6. Something else?

All of my names are first names in the top 50 US names of the last 100 years. So... All variations taken on Spotify, etc.

If you had to pick a musical DBA, what approach would you take?

For my solo project I just picked a band name even though it was only me.

But it’s all instrumental, I don’t sing. I could see singers wanting it to be their name for the project.

You can’t help it if it’s your name. Is there an extremely successful artist with the same name as you? If your name was Paul McCartney, maybe I’d suggest going with a band name.

I’d use my middle name, and my mother’s maiden name.
If choosing a band name, I’d pick something memorable, and slightly humorous.

Huh, that would certainly work for me: Anthony Caveda. Has a ring to it.

I was think about this recently because a friend and I were working on recording some originals and I wondered how to label them. I ended up just going with a combo of our initials for now, but found I could create a name by pronouncing our initials as if it were a word. That resulted in something pretty original.

    Hi.

    Dunno, is DBA taken? :)

I’d probably Google something like ‘obscure literary characters’ and pretend to be well read.

Okay, so I just tried that. It’s a tie between Bertram Wooster and Adrian Mole. Disappointed in Google, as they already grace my bookshelf.

Oh, and I thought I was clever once with Fat Inch and the Harping Lees. But, maybe not.

What are you interested in? What are some words you like the meaning of? If that word is used, use an online synonym generator and pop that word in, maybe you will find something that way.

Use an online band name / song name generator.

Turn to a random page in the dictionary and find something cool.

Just as portmanteau can be used for creative swearing and insults, it can be used for nom de plume too. Take a literary character and a rodent = Yossarian Vole, double-barrel it = Yossarian Vole-Trouser.
Stay close to the character's original name rather than portmanteau = Lemuel Seagull
Using this, many names can be conjured. The fun never starts...

Don't do that or all your internet accounts will be easily hacked!
That's like the number one top safety 'security question' used.

    I like the celebrity mash-up.
    Peewee DeNiro.
Or just something that sounds cool and quirky...I'm thinking about going with Chigger Malone or Jimson McGee.

I do't like band names that "telegraph" a musical classification. Anything indicating "Blues" or "Boomers" or whatever that might limit your potential audience is out for me.
My favorite source for likely band names is Charles Dickens. His characters' names are unique and intriguing.

If I did that, it would just be my uncle’s name. I went with Misheard Lyrics, and call myself Newton Idaho.

Charles Dickens is a good source, but so is Thomas Pynchon.

I've wondered if there are actual people in England named Dombey or Micawber.

For writing, my nom de plume is my first and last initial, and my middle name (slightly adjusted) as my surname.

    e.g. A.B. Charles.
