How would you fix this hole in hardwood floor/baseboard?

Yeah, it may be possible. The thing is that the pipe runs really close to the hole. I tried to get a photo of that, but tough to show it well.

In any case, opening it up from the top should give me a little more room to work.

I wish I lived down the street. This kind of stuff is so much fun...especially when it's not your own house! LOL! After reading your posts for quite a while I see you as a really sharp guy and, even though you are nice enough to share these kind of things I have no doubts that you'd do a great job with no help at all!

OK...but if you did...would it be like a 30 day ban punchline or just a "you should know better than that!" sort of deal?

Thanks boss! I am sharp enough to know when I don't know something, and that keeps me out of most kinds of trouble.

Sometime's it's funnier to imply something and let peoples' imaginations fill in the blanks in their own way than it is to actually say anything. ;)

You can't really get yourself into too much trouble here-there's already a hole in your floor.

BIG rats. Very obvious. If re-carpeting, you could just use wood or metal backer then fill it with "Rock Hard Putty". Cheap solution, but it is, well, rock hard...

Seems to me if you need that for a plumbing access point you can readdress the type of repair you need. Maybe an access door of some type. Fix the floor planks, cut them back to an anchor position and replace. Oh and remove the rodents or whatever they are 100%. No reason to cohabitate with that ****.

My suggestion would be to replace the trim pieces, and install a small door to the basement. You never know what you may need it for. Extension cords, hanging lighting for quick basement work, running a hose, running a shop vac in the basement, etc!

Go to an architectural salvage place and find a small brass flush mount doorway to use.

You obviously need to get an amp there to cover up the hole, a Princeton Reverb should work.

You live in civilization. There should be places that recycle old building materials. I'll bet you can find those same profiles in reclaimed would...maybe even with a similar finish.

As others have said, be sure to address the rodent issue (it sounds like you have with the kittens) and be sure to so the work under the floor and inside the wall to ensure stability.

William Tele, you do live only four hours from me, and I have a few similarly intriguing situations in my old house. When should I expect you?

Yes, quite frankly the profile of either board is not uncommon.
