If you have two pickups, you can do the devil's horns thing with your index and pinky, although it makes me want to break people's er... pickups... when they do that. I saw a video recently where the guy pointed at his two pickups with his index and middle fingers and I thought he deserved an award of some sort. What is really confusing to me is how do you point at the pickups on a strat or any other 3 pickup guitar. Do you pretend you're Jerry Garcia and fold the middle finger under?

Finally, if your guitar only has one pickup, and you have to point at it, the middle finger would be good if you didn't like it, and the index finger would be quite conventional, but what secret messages could you send by using your thumb?

This is the sort of thing that keeps me awake these days.

Do you point with your tongue in or out of your mouth is also an appropriate question?

It's not polite to point at your pickups.

    Just don't do it, ever!

I found these to be very practical:

The various color codes facilitate to not only pointing at the pickup but also the mode in which it is. I use red for humbucker mode, green for split coil sounds and blue for out of phase.

As a side effect you can use the red and the green ones when navigating, too.

Point with your puckered lips and make sure you raise both of your eyebrows at the same time.

If that still doesn't meet your standards, you could try waiving a troll at the pickup you're pertaining to...

Stuff like this occasionally bugs me too.

    To each their own quirks.

I don't point - I say "bridge pickup, middle pickup, neck pickup" - but then again, I don't make videos, so...

You will fit in very well around here. What are your thoughts on modern country, playing too many notes, and smart phones?

Well, at least the guy was pointing with his fingers. It could have been a lot worse.

Be careful how you point. If done in a way not standard in the country you have infultrated covertly it could lead to a shoot out in a Ratskeller.

whatever you point with, don't use one of these:

you will completely de-mux eddy currents, fry your caps, and cause owls to fly in through the windows

    I just whisper about them.
It’s amazing how well pickups hear, so you gotta be careful.
Pointing is rude, and sometimes hurtful.

    1) No opinion, don't listen to it... but if I did, would probably be "icky".
    2) Some people can get away with it. I can't.
    3) More trouble than they are worth for the most part, I didn't give my kids one.

Here's what you do on two pickup guitars: point at them with the expanded devil horns - i.e., with extended pinky and thumb - then do a quick little shake of the hand in the "pickup a phone and give me a call sometime, whydoncha?" maneuver.

    This signals pure class.

Subtlety is everything, always "point" with your middle finger, that way it offends everyone (wink, wink).
