I've found with rattle can, spray further away than the can recommends for uber light mist coats. The coats flash really quickly, so I usually do around four then let it sit 24 hours for the lacquer to shrink

Are you talking about "passes" - or "coats"?

4 passes over the surface from a distance may not be even a full "coat".

As other guys here have said........ the temperature and humidity that you spray at plays a big part on the end result.
Lacquer and water based clears are a pain to spray at high humidity levels.
If this is your first time using your setup its fine, you'll only get better with time.
