How much do you react/emote/groove to your OWN playing ? (Online gear demonstrators loving themselves …)

I’m generally in the angry face category with some blank stares mixed in. Working on a smile through the confusion look. Saw a few live Don Felder guitar jams recently and am trying to emulate the “it’s so easy to play guitar” smile he was rocking!

I'll do some moves (stepping out front when doing a solo, maybe whip the guitar around a little) and I'll groove with whatever I'm playing, but most of the time it looks like I'm mad at my guitar. I do actually smile on stage, but most of the time photographers don't catch it.

When I’m writing and/or recording my own music, I’m not in love with any of it until it’s nearly finished. During the process, you need to have a critical ear - I have no problem deleting the same track 19 times if it’s not right. No remorse or looking back. If I’m not quite sure, I won’t delete it but will record the same part on 2 or more tracks until I choose the one I like. Then the others get erased. Again, no remorse. I can’t imagine posting my stuff the way some people do. I’ll probably never post any of it - and I actually like some it!

Often walked around having a good time, enjoying the music.
In one of the bands we always goofed around with certain tunes....
But never did the guitar face thing....

99.9% of the time it was happy smiling times :)
Jamming on the other hand was organised chaos :D

Hi.

Home alone today. Have to learn two (easy) songs for tomorrow. So, I’ve decided the plan is to also work on my face pulling and move making.

Seriously though,* as people have mentioned here, there seems to be a ‘stillness / seriousness through concentration’ thing that happens. Every now and then I notice this and try to just ‘let go,’ relax and allow myself to move. Cos I think loosening up and moving to / with the music makes everything more fun for everyone. Which has also been noted here.

I tend to be able to do this more easily when playing bass.

* seriously as in, ‘not just for fun.’ Seriously, as in actually, am gong to have fun clowning for audience of none today

Blues mando star Rich Del Grosso tells a story about when his guitar accompanyist had to drop out at the last minute two days before a San Francisco show.

Rich's manager made some fast calls around and hooked him up with Charley Baty of Little Charley and the Nightcats fame.

Rich had never heard of him (Rich isn't a guitar slut like us), and they didn't have time to meet up before the show. When they got started playing, Rich kept noticing Charley frowning and wincing and grimmacing.

Then Charley noticed Rich noticing. So he sidled over to Rich, leaned over and said, "I know I don't show it, but inside, I'm bubbly!"

I have a picture that shows me looking very irritable on-stage.

But in all fairness to me, it was my annoying sister-in-law sticking her camera in my face and the face of my bandmates non-stop for almost 30 minutes straight while we were trying to play a set. The other guitarist turned around and stuck his butt in her face.

When I’m not irritated, I look fairly serious. I kinda scrunch up or snarl when I sing.

Oh well. I ain’t that good-looking anyway.

If you play out I think a certain amount is necessary! I certainly like to see a musician get into his groove. Its called entertainment.

I've thought this over, I've stocked up on rotten tomatoes, wilted celery, and spoiled red onions. I'm just waiting for me to come out on stage. One of us is going to do some serious emoting!

I am the most boring appearance player, Rich Robinson is my visual stylistic role model. I do keep my head up, make eye contact with audience and band mates and smile.

The best guitar players I have played with generally make it look easy. The less talented sometime make it look painful.

There are people that start to dance when the groove hits them and there are people that will only tap their feet at the beat. I wonder who enjoys music more...
