How much do you react/emote/groove to your OWN playing ? (Online gear demonstrators loving themselves …)

I know you don’t look in a mirror while you’re playing (or maybe you do 😳) but by your own honest estimation, how much head shaking, eyes squeezed tight, grabbing the guitar and really shaking it, maybe pointing the neck a little toward the ceiling, reacting toward your absolutely heavenly tone/filthy playing do YOU DO ? 🫵🏻

Along with the “tasty blues” tropes that they all play , I think there’s also a certain set of facial expressions and upper body movements that online gear demo dudes do while they are playing/when they’re making a clip.

The guy that’s on That Pedal Show that sits on the right with the red telecaster is a prime example. He’s constantly just bowled over by the sounds/notes coming out of his guitar. Sometimes I think he’s gonna pass out.

And I think he’s a totally delightful guy and a great player, but I just compare him in my head to somebody like Andy, or Michael Lemo from Norms, who are both monster players and rarely react to the music they are creating.

And then I see the over-emoting filter down to the guys in their living rooms, trying to get something started online, and I think , either everybody really digs the crap out of their own playing or they’re just reacting to a trope that they’ve seen countless times and attempting it/perpetuating it themselves.

Do YOU dig YOU ? And how much ? 😲🤗😫☺️🥰

I didn't "emote" that much even on stage. I leaned back once, and it was caught on film.

When I see someone playing that way , it’s hard to watch . Good your you if you are physically able to express your feelings through your instrument, but I wish they would leave that other stuff out of it. To each their own. I just won’t watch it

Those boots are righteous as is the band and the venue is Corral - something ?
A very excellent photo all the way around.
I love my own playing but I’m not very demonstrative. I hurt my own feelings because I never show myself how much I really love me.
sounds like you need a little self-care, as the kids say these days !

Hi.

To be fair, the right hand guy, Dan, really does get emotional over guitar tones. There’s some shows where he’s close to crying, cos he is so moved just by the sound.

But I also get what you mean. Scott, from Scott’s Bass (or whatever it’s called) really gets the super groovy Bass Face going.

I’ve mentioned before that practice studios here all have at least one wall of floor to ceiling mirrors. It’s for getting one’s moves down. Sometimes I peak in to watch young bands with all the members posing. The flip side is, sometimes you get a bunch of people facing in odd directions, cos no one want to be looking at themselves.

As for me, personally, I’ve seen video and I sometimes have this odd shoulder twitch thing. It seems to be involuntary and I’m not really aware of doing it, until it’s done. But man, it looks dorky…

I've been using a mirror for practice for a long, long time. I don't stare at my face but rather my hands. I think the advice came from a column Vai wrote many years ago, but the gist of it is: you can see when your playing is effortless and when it isn't. By spending some time focusing just on the appearance of effortlessness in your hands, your playing will become effortless.

Anyway, I have a few guitarface-isms. I'm not Steve Howe, but I've been known to stick my tongue out of the corner of my mouth and look up to the magical chord sheet in the sky when I am improvising. I've also noticed that I seem to "talk" through really odd phrases. My jaw clenches and unclenches like I'm saying the notes. I cannot reproduce this tic consciously.

Sick boots. If you’re gonna be on stage, Be on stage. Looks like y’all were rockin!
I was gonna say the same about the boots!

What’s he have shoved in there with a cord attached? Or am I just looking at it funny?

I like the bass player looking at the singer, looks like he’s getting amusement out of the front man antics
