How many electric guitars are too many?...I mean, we only really need one, right?...
I'm asking for my live in girlfriend...she asked me, and I have no answer...lol.
Seriously though, I currently have eight electrics (and one that has been on order for about 6 months...should get it in three months).
I keep selling of stuff on reverb and such, but still cant see myself selling off one guitar.
Now, I've had some for 15 to 17 years, so they are keepers but three I bought this year, so it's not all sentimental.
Just wondering how many electric guitars some people here have. Is it 10 or less?...

(Notice I keep saying electric guitars and not banjos, or lapsteels... got too many of those to but I can sell them)

Well, only you can decide, right?

I have three. I could see adding one more, but then any new ones would probably mean getting rid of another. While I do play out some (not now due to covid though), I am primarily a hobbyist and I don’t like too much clutter. So for me, beyond about 4 is too many. Then again, I have my fourth amp coming later this week....

This has been the subject of considerable debate and much hand-wringing, but the consensus answer is N+2, where N is the number you currently own

Whatever you have plus one. Until you get that one, then reapply the formula.

I have five electric guitars and two acoustics. I don’t think I need more than I have now and I could make due with one. Need is different. I need my FCS Strat and my Telecaster. Want is different still. I’d like a Jazzmaster. I don’t need it. I’d consider trading my SG or my second Strat. So there’s no easy answer to how many is too many. I never bought a guitar or amp on credit. Maybe too many is more than you can pay for.

If the house starts getting too small, build a addition or buy a bigger house.

There is no fixed, maximum number. You keep going until your soul is satisfied.

The problem with this derivative of the Ideal Guitar Number formula is that you can never buy more than one guitar at a time.

I believe that the "too many" number for guitars is completely theoretical.

You don't have enough until you have enough to make her move out. Then you can buy some more.

1 acoustic 4 electrics, but one of the electrics is for sale. 3 seems to be my magic number, otherwise they just become case queens. I gotz no room for passengers on this particular ride...

    Almost embarrassed.....but ...
    ..an Eastwood....

    The Devo cloud guitar...

I've never owned nor wanted a Artist model before but I am a pretty big Devo fan and the electronics and design of this one intrigued me. So I preordered about 6 months ago.

Are we not men..? We are DEVO.

I used to joke about there being no such thing as too many guitars. However, for me it has become when I can't remember which ones are stashed under which bed. Probably a normal person would call it when you're stashing guitars under other people's beds.

I'm down to 26-ish electrics, one semi acoustic, one lap steel & one Bass. Not going to count what I could make from parts.

A couple years ago I was at 35, so this is progress.......right?

P.S. My G.F. and I have 3 kids between us, my house is a 1050 sq/ft & I rent my basement out. It's fair to say I have over run us with instruments and random parts.

Many years ago, in another city, I dated this young woman who worked at a local college. We had only been dating a few weeks when she was standing in my living room, looking around at all of the guitars. Now I was playing in two bands at the time, plus freelancing, so it wasn't just a hobby. And we weren't living together, my condo was paid for, etc.

"Why do you have so many guitars?"
"You can only play one at a time."
"They all sound the same to me."
    Yadda yadda yadda.

A few weeks later, I was helping her move from one apartment to the next. I opened the door to her walk-in closet and said:

"Why do you have so many black dresses?"
"You can only wear one at a time."
"They all look the same to me."

From the living room I heard "Okay! I'll never complain about your guitars again!"

And true to her word, she didn't.
We broke up a couple of weeks later.

Twenty years later, I have trouble remembering her name.
