I own 5 basses, and ALL 5 cost me a total of $968.95

I really don't even hardly play bass, but these were "Steals" I bought more for how cheap they were than variety.

I have three. I am probably more of a bassist that guitarist at this point, and #1 is the white Squier Affinity P-bass on the right. Strung with .045-.100 D’Addario chrome flats. An all-stock $50 pawnshop rescue that just flat works.

Left of that is a Dean Demonator 4 awaiting its turn under the soldering iron. I got it for next to nothing with dead active electronics, and the plan is to wire it up like a passive J bass for starters and see how I like it. I like the neck shape quite a bit already.

The third one (not pictured) is a dinged-up sunburst Johnson P copy awaiting a pickup replacement. Another one that happens to have a pretty nice neck, and a snappy tone that I like as an alternative sometimes to my mellower white P.

I only have one bass, and it's the only one I need. It does everything I need it to to a better degree than most I've ever been able to play!
    front.jpg back.jpg

P bass coils are some real deal Seymour Duncan pickups wound in 1974, the bridge pickup is just something I cobbled together here in my shop with some leftover pickup stuff. It's nothing spectacular, but it works. These both go into a passive wiring harness that I *basically* designed myself.

If I had to pick another bass, I'm absolutely going to get my hands on a short scale violin bass of some sort. Maybe a T40 after that?

I picked up a Fender Jazz bass with the intent of learning some bass lines, but haven't got around to it yet.

My brother gave me a Carvin neck through 5 string bass. That one I am fixing up for my son.

I traded a guitar amp for my one and only Epi Allen Woody Rumblekat ... with my wife, the bass player. It was too heavy for her petite frame, but I love the retro sound from it. She has many basses and really the only other one of her's that I like is her Fender Mustang bass.

When I put my Stingray 5 in front of the mirror I have 2, but when it goes back in the music room I only have one.

I've got two. I just bought a Fender Player Series Mustang short scale and I also have a super lightweight full-scale paulownia P-Bass that I put together a couple of years ago - GFS body and neck and a Tonerider pickup. It weighs about 7 lbs - lighter than my Mustang SS.

Love the paint job, and would like to know more about how you did that, and also how your pickup wiring is set up (might give me some alternate ideas for wiring up my two-pickup Dean!)

Do they all have to be, you know, assembled?

Have eight basses in functional condition, including my #1 Stingray, a US-made Washburn with Barts in it, several frankenbasses that were as much a result of having some of the parts on hand than any specific plan (but a Schecter 35" scale 5-string neck on a Fernandes body with a Sandberg bridge and Dimarzio J pups is a really great recipe for piano tone, even with fingers) and at least that many (if not more) in the parts pile. I treat most of my instruments like Lego. Of the basses, I think it's just the Stingray and Washburn that haven't been spliced together, and as soon as I find a decent neck for the Washburn (the original split through the back, stupid two-piece neck design), off it goes. Off the top of my head, out in the lumber pile I have most of a 90's Charvel 2, a BC Rich Warlock, a Kramer P copy, a Japanese bass built out of what looks like a Strat body, a short-scale Teisco body and laminated neck combo that needs a new pickguard and some other miscellaneous parts, a couple of J copies waiting for paint and parts, more that I can't remember at the moment.

1968 Fender Telecaster bass (avatar) Guild Ashbory (with the silicone rubber band strings) Squier Jaguar longscale PJ bass, Epiphone EB-3L (Heritage red- my “Jack Bruce” bass ) Fender MIM Classic 60s Jazz Bass (Nitro finish- sunburst with tort guard), Ibanez TMB 100 (mint green with maple fretboard and tort guard)
I guess that’s five or six. Six. And (as my wife says...) “How many can you play at one time???” Just one :p.
They are all quite different- I really need a straight P bass to round out the herd.
Might get that $89 Glarry and play around with it! Hmmm!

At one point I owned seven and they were mostly different, though three of them were P basses. Now I mostly play guitar and have one P bass. Two jazzmasters and two martin dreadnaughts.

Best bass I ever owned was a Carvin Bunny Brunel 5. I sold it after several hundred hours of play/rehearsal. I don’t play much bass anymore but I do have one. F8F0668E-3A72-4B0E-990B-F15831FB40A2.jpeg
