It's funny I posted this in June and I've since sold off the Super and the Vibro-King. Down to the three Tweeds now.

Nooooo! Love the VK. I never played the later reissue, only the blonde one. I had a stab at a new one but opted for the Tonemaster head instead. The TM was one of those amps that never gelled with the band. No cut. And it was LOUD at it’s sweet spot. Which speakers did your VK have?

I run a wet/dry-setup lately: wet amp is a Hughes & Kettner Edition Tube 25th Anniversary, dry amp an IMG Stageline GAT1250 (low budget tube combo).
My backup amp is a Hughes & Kettner Edition Tube 20th Anniversary.
Then there is a Laney TT20, which has been changed to a top; I run it with a lowbudget 12" cab.
Laney A-Fresco battery-powered fullrange amp for busking.
Peavey Express - which is kind of the annoying cousin nobody likes....I now use it for bass in small clubs.
Ashdown Mi-Bass top with a 2x12" cab, built by a friend. This is my main bass-setup.
Peavey Minx 110 basscombo for practice.

I still look through ebay and reverb for interesting amps from time to time.....but until now I'll stay away from amp-GAS....

Originally it had the Jensens. I took those out and put a set of Weber DT-10's in. The Webers were better. I sold it for a few reasons: 1) Weight. 76 lbs. Need I say more? 2) It was redundant. I also have a Bassman and a Twin. It never got played and I wasn't going to take it to a gig again. 3) Honestly my 5F6A Bassman sounds better.

The funny part about Vibro Kings is they did NOT hold their value. I almost couldn't give mine away at less than half the original sticker price. They're like TRRI's on the used market - no one wants those big, heavy, loud amps.

I gotta ask, with a house full of legendary amps like that, what do you even use the Hot Rod Deluxe for? A coffee table?

They were always a dream amp for me. But that was way back in the early 90’s.

I basically sold a nice blonde (“loaded” with original EV) Boogie Mark IIB two years ago for the same reason. Way too heavy! Believe it was pushing 70lbs.

You’re right too, the tweed Bassman does it all and at just under or over a manageable 50 lbs. I was telling one of my longtime gear buddies yesterday that once I get my Bassman RI back from Marsh, I’m done! Feels weird to say that - Only took 40 years! But it’s true! There is nothing in the amp world that excites me. Unless a barn find on something vintage for peanuts comes along I already have my “ride into the sunset” amps all covered.

Trust me, the 5F6A sounds better than the Vibro-King. I did an A/B between them multiple times to be sure I wanted to sell the VK. The VK is very PRESENT. As in the notes sound like they're right there next to you. The Bassman has a more open and airy quality. But yeah, the weight. I gigged the VK out of a stubborn resolve to get my moneys worth out of it. But it was excessive and unnecessary. An amp I regretted purchasing in the first place.

Ottoman... Just kidding. Actually the Marshall is the ottoman. I bought the HRD brand new in '98 when a new GC in Towson MD was opening and had some ridiculous grand opening specials. I think it was $250 and it was the first and only new amp I've ever bought. Right now it has a 12" 140W Eminence Red Hot and Blues speaker in it and I consider it to be my very loud "clean headroom" amp. I've done all the popular mods to it and it sounds really great. Admittedly though i don't really play it much compared to the others...

I guess it would be useful for those dive bar gigs where the security of the gear is shaky at best.
