I have worked really hard at being able to figure out the changes to a song. What takes me a whole lot longer is actually "learning" the song. For me, it often takes me an entire month to put it all together.
The other thing it taught me though is this: It is a lot harder to learn to play like somebody else than it does to play like myself.
Once I realized that, I started spending a lot more time writing than learning songs by others. I don't have an chart toppers, but what I wrote, I can play really well.
