Well, Mark Knopfler was never much to “look” at, and these days he’s bald and showing his age. But dayum - that man can play!!

I play outlaw country so my stage clothes aren't really a stretch from what I normally would wear. I do believe though that a little presentation can go a long way.

It’s not so much the look, as it is the instruments that you can play.

Here is a fun photo of me ( fat guy sitting down) who SO (!!) does not look like a badass R&R guitar player( but I am!) and my buddy Jason, who does, and Is!
( I always tell him "You.look like a '60's guitar hippie" which he kind of is- hell of a Garcia/ Country picker)

If you don't look like a guitarist, then you look like sheep. Who wants to look like sheep?

Wear those cargo shorts and bumched shrits proudly.

Neither of you look like sheep. Congrats.

However, what happened to your cargo shorts that day?

stagecraft is important. how you look is a part of that. but, it certainly depends on the band. if you're playing in zac brown band, you can probably wear whatever fell out of your closet. if you're in some kind of gothic-industrial black metal band, there will be a different set of expectations. you can certainly look dumb doing either one! haha

Well image is huge in any industry ... hard to tell what a guitarist looks like, there’s all kinds, clean cut jazz and country musicians and then there are the long hair types ... I ‘ve been growing my hair out long and at my last gig , that’s all everyone talked about around me ... go figure ,,,, however, I do like my lawyers in suits and doctors in lab coats

The guitar player wears his overalls backside front, right? Too much to worry about...back to cargo shorts...

I don't watch any of the America's Got Talent type shows, nor do I follow many of the contemporary acts that get all the radio play, but it seems to me that "generally" they have a certain look. They're usually lean, blue collar-ish, mostly "tatted", "scruffy" (for that everyman look) and worst of all, SOUND a lot like every other popular act and performer. Now, before you gather the torches and pitchforks, I KNOW there are exceptions and differences, but not much.
In the nineties I knew a guy who ran a small sign service shop. (I was a neon glassblower) He looked like MANY of the country/pop stars of the day......tall, slender, close cropped beard with just touches of gray, dressed in starched jeans and pearl-snap shirts, and often wore a George Strait type hat. Think "Eddie Rabbit". He even had the "swagger". He could walk into a club or restaurant and was automatically treated like a celebrity. You could see people leaning over to their friends and whispering, "Isn't that....uh, what's his name?" He never did anything to discourage it. He basically lived the "star" life without being able to sing a lick. ;)

Imagine a 5'6" Danny DeVito playing an SG and shredding like an '80s metalhead. That's me. Oh, and I like to wear Hawaiian shirts, cargo shorts, and sandals. No idea how it comes across to other people.
