The 80’s and 90’s were glam but on today’s American idol etc lots of ordinary looking people being picked purely on skill.

Is having the musicians LOOK no longer important?

    Discuss.

It obviously doesn’t effect my employability.
I look every heartbeat of my age, and I was never much to look at.
    I don’t look like a guitar player.
Not much hair, what’s left is gray, trimmed beard is gray, 200lbs., 6 ft, no ink, no stage presence.
    That’s me.
I can sing and play though.
I don’t care much about what I look like.
    I do wear clean shirts.

For what you're describing (American Idol and whatnot), I feel like the "ordinary" look is part of the appeal. These are supposed to be everyday people trying to make their dreams real, etc. etc. I wouldn't be surprised if they start looking more "star"-like as a season progresses. It's part of the narrative, and "reality" TV or not, there's a narrative.

More generally, I guess whatever you look like what you play guitar can be included in what a guitarist "looks like," because that's what you look like and you're playing guitar. Lots of stage-looking clothing is stuff you might wear on any day anyway. Jeans, boots, sneakers, t-shirts...

Crazy costumes and "specialty" pieces like leather pants, platform boots and whatnot haven't really been a thing since the '80's, aside from the campy and the "ironic" bands.

From this site I’ve learned real musicians wear cargo shorts and T-shirts ;)

I don't think I look like a guitar player, I think I look like a bass player. I love playing bass and I used to get all kinds of complements on my bass playing. but i'm stuck paying guitar.

but none of it is important.

think if you look like a band & bring the enthusiasm...it goes a long way. Age really doesn't matter..rock it..if ya got the look cool. if you got the sound..they will be there....

You mean like a David Gilmour or Mark Knopler - not that important.

I have no idea. But I do get the odd stranger asking me if I'm a musician

Maybe it's the cargo shorts and bumched shrit...

It never was, unless you're working for a record company and not yourself.

If you can really play, looks don't matter ... If you can't, looks don't matter ...

As a guy who's covered in tats, scars, and always getting told I look stoned. It's very important for me to not look like a musician ; )
So it's blue jeans, ropers, and a nice button down for me.

    .

Rock 'n Roll, Pop, and Country bands had to get a whole lot better looking once MTV hit.
That event transformed the music industry into a modeling agency that also made some sort of melody, with auto tuners and lip syncing along the way.

    Generally speaking :

A book is better than the movie.

Radio is more enjoyable than the TV.

Visual stimulus removes all previous misconceptions.
