    Good points.

Doesn't a Texan commonly drive two hours just for a plate of barbecue?
Which says nothing about barbecue but everything about Texans!

    .

After a few times confirming a CL meetup, I'm on the road, they know I'm on the road, I check in to tell them I'm just around the corner from the meetup, and they tell me they just sold it to this other person. So I won't go more than an hour.

I also stopped looking at any Gibson guitars after doing a long ride out, finding a cracked/repaired headstock, a "surprised seller" telling me it's stronger than before ... I'm not dealing with that drama, and I drive the long ride home with my cash.

Because, of course, all used Gibsons have broken headstocks.

That is why I’m so undecided. I only see one available, in the country!

It would depend, but I've never driven more than three hours for anything gear related.

You will never again consider buying any Gibson because some random seller didn't disclose a repair?

The quality of the tip or listing has to be considered, as well. More than once I've been victimized by the Craigslist ad that was "corrected" as I was en route.

The distance depends on how special the guitar is, and how good the deal is.

Find me a 1956 Martin D-21 that doesn't need a neck reset, for $1000, and I'll drive across the continent.

I had my mind set on a D'Angelico EX SS. I drove two hours one way in order to get it at a price $100 lower than then lowest price I had seen after a LOT of looking in the LA area.

I have yet to even leave town for a guitar or amp.
I have had to drive an hour to a GC to get some of my PA and Recording gear.

I would do a road trip for a nice guitar but, so far, nothing has caught my eye.

Seriously, if it isn't an instrument I have played, I just don't want to make the trip.
    What if it is bogus?
    Anyway ...

I'm 2.5 hours from La Crosse. I'd make the trip to Pete's to check out something in person and buy it. A Craigslist sale? I don't know...it would have to be a smoking deal and I'd have to get a really good vibe from the seller for me to go more than an hour.

I only need the barest of excuses to drive anyplace. No matter how far. I’m in Cleveland. If there’s a guitar in Santa Fe and you really want it, I’m always up for a road trip, if you’re paying the expenses. For me personally? The drive has to figure into the price and it still has to be a fair deal. I’ll maybe go a little over if it’s something really hard to find that I really want.

The farthest I've driven is from around the middle of LI to just across the Tappan Zee Bridge (about 1.5 hours) to buy an Epiphone LP Special DC. It was worth it, that was a great guitar.

I once drove up to Croton on Hudson (about 2.5 hours) to trade a guitar, some pointy Godin that I really didn't like that much. Got a Peavey Wiggy for it, so it was worth the drive.

After all these years, I find that I will drive as much as 4 hours for the right amp, but only about an hour for the guitar.

Shipping a guitar is easy, safe, and pretty cheap, but amplifiers are in a whole different classification.

I drove 200 miles for a guitar. On the way back I got pulled over for speeding. The cop was just about to start writing the ticket when he noticed the case on the back seat. We talked about guitars for a few minutes and he let me off with a warning.

As others mentioned, it depends on the guitar and the price.

When I was doing a lot of antique and estate sales/auctions I'd drive an hour or so for those. I'd that's about my max on most things unless there's a known great deal at the other end of the drive. We did drive over to Alabama and Tennessee for a few sales that were promising.

Now, if I was buying a very expensive guitar, like a custom shop Fender, I'd drive 5 hours up to North Carolina to Casino Guitars instead of giving any of the hoity-toity guitar stores around the Atlanta metro area my money.
