Every time I'm on a website, I now have endless pop-up ads from GC, MF, Sweetwater, Zounds, etc, popping up. I use Internet Explorer as my browser. Can anyone tell me how to opt out on these annoying ads? It's out of hand, and I really rsent Google telling me what I should buy. It's like they're spying on me.

You can get rid of them with Chrome, too. Hard to believe, but it works. I have ditched Facebook ads and ads on some other sites like ArcaMax.

caution, the following is the opinion of someone who has been using computers since 1984 and the internet since it was just a baby linking a handful of Universities. Im not the smartest guy but I have well developed prejudices
.
actually you invited that stuff in (without meaning to) when something is offered free we are all weak and greedy beings, we grab without looking. Often what is offered free really is free but you didnt notice all the garbageware that you ok'd to install at the same time. Always read the step by step installer windows and NEVER click "install automatically" recommended' always use "custom install" and uncheck any crap trying to glide in on another programs coattails.
It isnt Internet Exploders fault, I have IE on this Win7 box and its clean. Its google and its 'toolbar's you want to get rid of. I cant give precise instructions to remove other than check for google add-ons in the browser options and check 'add-remove' programs in your control panel for anything that looks fishy. Then learn how to keep google far away. Change the default search engine to dogpile.com or duckduckgo.com. Resist the temptation to download 'helpful' toolbars of any kind.
millions of people love google and google chrome and all that goes with it
I want it far away from my 3 computers..

I have used Firefox and the added AdBlock lite for so many years its always a shock to see someone elses computer screen filled with crap ads. Adblock Lite is like having a bouncer at the door but it cant stop you from inviting sketchy strangers in..

Try hitting start, when the search box appears at the bottom of the box that opens type in "MRT" without the quotes, (malware removal tool) run the program and see if it detects the malware that is causing your problem.

Yeah, sounds more like malware to me. I run chrome stock with no adblock plugins and dont get any popup ads on those sites. I dont run any toolbars either though (does anybody actually still use those??)

If you install adblock, support the developer. Maybe only $5, but it keeps the good guys in business.

I don't have a problem with pop-up ads, but the ones I hate are the ones that people deliberately put on a page but which seem to have to load first. Then when their servers are overloaded, or something out on the 'net is preventing quick access, the page won't load until the ad supplier is contacted (Google ads is bad for this). So you sit there with an empty page while your browser keeps trying to contact the advertising supplier. Arrrrrgh!

If they'd just load the page, THEN the ads, it would work fine. Good grief!

Block pop-ups and adverts in settings.

Also block all cookies except the ones that are actually useful to you.
(I'm using FireFox)

Well one thing I hate is let's say reading news on page A, click on story, go to page B, then click on the back button, nothing happens, click on the back button and hold, and I see about 5 links of ads before I get back to page A, really annoying, so I copy the URL of the ads, they are often (link removed) ( or something like that) so I put this address in the restricted/forbidden sites in IE.
Never have that problem again. I am sure people know what I should be doing instead, but that works for me

that is basically what Adblock does for you just a little more streamlined.
After you put Adblock in place you grab a ready made list of hundreds of ad sites to plug in. When you find ads that are annoying that arent already blacklisted, you right click on the ad, confirm the kill and its in the blocklist.

Adblock Plus with Firefox is great. It removes adds from youtube videos and other places as well.
www.startpage.com is a great replacement for google too. It uses Google's engine but runs you through a proxy anonymously.
