or "Bands that blew you away but never really made it, so nobody knows who they are"

For me it has to be The Afghan Whigs, a late 80's, early 90's alternative rock band that just blew me away with the album "Gentlemen" then disappeared. I think the Grunge wave did this to lots of good bands. Alternative, but not grunge so there was no place for them in the industry grinder.

You can say that again, the original lineup of the Whigs was amazing. I first saw them in a little bar when they were just a local Cincinnati band, and Dulli totally owned the room like they were the biggest rock stars on the planet. I really liked McCollum's guitar playing, too- he had a unique blend of '70s rock and funk that didn't sound out of place in a '90s indie rock band. I've heard the stuff they've made recently and some of it's really good, but without Earle and McCollum it's just not the Afghan Whigs, it's Greg Dulli solo with the bass player from the Afghan Whigs.

I never paid attention to them because I always assumed they were from Afghanistan, and I'm not into middle Eastern music.

i saw them live a couple years ago. or maybe it was just Greg Dulli and friends. cannot quite remember.

anyway, they put on an excellent live show. i kind of went into that one as a non-fan and came out a convert.

    good stuff

I saw them play at the 9:30 club many years ago and they burned the place down. GREAT band.

Another group that should be huge and isn't is Gogol Bordello. I think they're a bit too 'international' to be popular in the US, but they have amazing songs and they KILL in a live context:
