Hi folks, this is about clean tones. If I switch on my cry baby there is a noticeable volume bump. If the guitar sat well in the mix before it is too loud. So far I'm rolling back the guitar volume. Any other way to deal with this? Is there any wah that allows me to adjust (tame) the volume (I've seen only boosts)?

If you have a pedal that has SMT components it's a difficult process to mod.

But if you have an "old school" pedal with through hole components you can find mod's online that simply involve changing a resistor that will cure the volume jump and other issues that your pedal might have that you don't like.

I've done this and other mod's on my wah pedal with great results.

I’ve got a Monster Swamp Thang Tremelo pedal that has the same issue...my only complaint about that pedal. I just roll the guitar volume back a couple numbers. Seems to be the easiest fix to me.

You could put a pedal like a clean boost that goes below unity gain, or a volume pedal, in a loop with your wah. This way engaging the wah would also engage the other one to lower the volume and compensate.

But that’s probably not the cheapest nor the most simple option.

I am always working my volume pot. Always. If there was a boost with my wah, I would just make the change with a twist.

I'd rather just make one move – switch on the wah. Right now I'm switching on the wah AND roll back the guitar volume. This is something I can at least do simultanously. Having to hit 2 footswitches would make it worse IMHO.

Edit: I see you propose to have the wah and the minus "boost" in a loop. Still would make two moves for the foot: switch the loop and then move the wah.

Would it be possible to just add an output volume control to the wah? That way I could control everything by using the wah's switch.

Dont some make a wah with a volume pot on the side? I dont remember a volume jump with wah though, more the opposite. Adding a volume pot on the side would not be hard to control input. Just like putting a cheap $20 volume pedal before the wah.

On another subject: A nice solution would be a wah that stays level volume throughout the cycle of cocking. Wah cocked to the bass side is hard to hear, to the treble side is piercing. With all the fancy wahs to come out over the years, you'd think someone would have made a volume compensated wah that levels volume no matter where you are cocked.

How about a compressor after the wah that's always on, but set the threshold so that it only affects the loudest sounds (i.e. the peaks from the wah) with ratio set high?

What wah pedal do you have?

    Use a compressor.

I used to add a compressor. Then I added a volume knob to my wah.

    That's one of the reasons why I use a T-Rex Gull Wah: 3 different voicings, a volume/boost control and a scoop-control.

Cry Baby Standard Wah – I have two, one bought in the 90s and one this year – a limited edition in smoked chrome. Both have the volume bump.

it's actually a result of your signal chain
buffer in the wah can affect volume depending on input impedance of downstream input(s)
you might get better results with a true-bypass mod
resistor mod might work for current setup, but react differently if you change something in the chain
volume control mod will fix the issue, and allow adjustments for signal chain revisions

I can adjust for the volume boost of my Crybaby (true-bypass modded) by playing softer

I dealt with it by buying a wah that doesn't have it.
