How did Nickelback become the butt of so many jokes?

I initially had guessed that, but then you have the Grateful Dead and The Doors; arguably, very decisive bands with probably more people disliking them than liking them (those who like them REALLY like them...), but they rarely are the butt of jokes.

You may have rarely heard the jokes, but the Dead are most definitely the butt of a LOT of jokes (ie, being unlistenable if you're not tripping acid).

It's generational. Nickelback will be among the last and longest, because rock is now officially dead. And no one exemplifies the death of rock better than Nickelback.

Though statistically. nearly everyone here has a nickel back album.
I don't know about that. Maybe statistically, but I never heard a them before this, and nobody in my circle of 7 or 8 close friends has any of their albums. Probly more likely that many of their fans have several of their albums which drives the numbers up.

The wife and I just celebrated our 37th. At this point, we've told each other our best jokes so many times that we don't tell them anymore. It's more like, "Hey - - Number 37! Ha ha ha ha ha." Maturity is good that way. More efficient.

I guess NickelBack is #1247, thereabouts?

I'm no fan; nothing that I've heard from them floats my boat. But what I have heard sounds like some pretty solid rock and roll. What's the deal?
Okay, let me be clear - I'm not stating this as true or fact. I'm speculating only. I could be absolutely wrong about this band, but having said that - I wonder *if* it might be that they are a cookie cutter, formulaic corporate rock band. I find that this often puts people off. They sense something disingenuous in that sort of thing, and find it off putting.

I state that as an *if* because truth be told, I don't know if I've ever heard a song by that band. If I have, I had no idea it was them, so I don't even know what they sound like.

It’s hard to say. I suspect that it’s because they’re not a great band in the way that the stones or u2 are. They’re a very good band though. They play stadiums to hundreds of thousands. Rubbish bands don’t do that. But critics point to formulaic songs and some cheesy lyrics. Critics of course hate them because a lot of critics can’t stand mainstream. This for some reason snowballed. Though statistically. nearly everyone here has a nickel back album.

Rubbish band is truly subjective. Also, I'm one of those here that doesn't have a Nickelback album. I seriously question that "nearly everyone here" has one.

The key word was ‘statistically’. The number of nickel back records sold is extremely high. So yes. Maybe not. But when you look at the percentages they sold it is conceivable.

To me it seems a lot of people only know Nickelback from their singles. A bit like thinking all Extreme songs sound like More than words. They had some really good and interesting songs on their 2nd and 3rd albums, before they blew up…

Apologies if it's already been posted, but I'm pretty sure this was where it started:

I know it was the first time I ever heard reference to it. Up until then, I thought it was just me...

Maybe because most of their songs sound the same and the lyrics are silly.

“Look at this photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh. How did our eyes get so red? And what the hell is on Joey’s head?”

Whats that even mean?
How can you not like that ? It doesn't have to mean anything. It's like that stairway song " someone put sprinkles on the mayqueen" what's that supposed to mean?

Other than they're formulaic, and seem to put image before the music, no idea. I hear Imagine Dragons or Coldplay has that throne now.

If you play this backwards

“Look at this photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh. How did our eyes get so red? And what the hell is on Joey’s head?”

it sounds terrible but still better than it does forwards. I didnt realize that was even possible.
That's funny. I've never even heard a Nickelback song but now I want to try it.
