How come people people take a state name, like California, and refer to it in casual conversation as "Cali"?

Is it to show off a degree of familiarity? Affection? A degree of mastery? Are they compensating for a certain lack of confidence by infantilizing the name? Why don't people say, Texasy? Ohioy? Australia-ee, Denmarky, U.K.-ey, or New Yorky (Nyorky?)? Is it just to shorten a name? I think not.

How come motorcyclist refer to the motorcycle products of the Yamaha company as "Yammies", but the concert pianists are never heard to say "My piano? Oh, I only play a Yammy". Why don't Honda motorcyclists refer to "my Hondi"? Incidentally, Harley, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Guzzi riders get a full pass on this post. Beemer owners, I'll get to you in a subsequent post.

How come we all play the "Tele", but nobody plays the "Strati"? Or the "Pauli", or the 335-ee, the Jaguary, or the Jazzmastery?

    Can anybody explain?

    How Come?

I've lived in California my entire life. I've never heard someone say "Cali". That's like calling San Francisco "Frisco". No one who lives here says that.

It's all to do with how best words/abbreviations scan.
For more, I'm afraid, .... ask a proper linguist not an old scientist ;)

Didn't say Cali natives use this term. Didn't specify. (Ooops! did I just say that word?) Anyway, I didn't imagine it.

affection sometimes. derision sometimes. ignorance sometimes. sometimes for status.. you are right that when folks use it, you should listen and contextualize so you can guess intent.

we play strats too.. and 'my paul' so, that is overreach.. but understandable.

People play winners and losers A LOT. It is our least cool thing.

That is the truth. Years ago a brother in law of mine who lived in Ohio, always referred to California as Cali. I told him that no one from California ever referred to California as Cali. He became indignant, but he stopped with the Cali bs.

Are you sure they were talking about California and not discussing Hinduism?

I think we should call Jaguars, “Jaggies” and Jazzmasters, “Jazzies”. And how about, “Paulies” for Les Pauls?

It's been awhile... Do San Franciso folks still hate it when you refer to their city as Frisco? That used to be a big no no.

It’s because LL Cool J and the Notorious BIG both were going back there in separate songs.

we're the experts down here, give us a name and we'll find a way to shorten/familiarise it...

Kwaka, Suzy, Yammy.... though Honda seems immune?... maybe it's short enough to say anyway?...

People do it with everything, including sports teams (Pats, Bronx, Fins, etc.).

It implies the speaker is an initiate with some sort of inside track: "Look! I'm a member of a club!"

Yep. Same for Louisiana. If anyone says “Loo-zee-ana” you know they’re a silly Yankee, *cough*, I mean from somewhere else.

similar to the no ketchup on hot dogs narrative... the anti 'frisco' thing came from one man. Herb Caen. He wrote a column about a REALLY long time ago. People like to claim it the way the people used to claim the 'secret menu' at in and out burger....

Most gentle people could care less... as a young man living in Phoenix (framing houses in the summer) my arizona friends often spoke of 'Cali' and it intrigued me, I'd not heard it before.

I think it is no big deal... and somehow kind of bad to be so tribal.
