How come people people take a state name, like California, and refer to it in casual conversation as "Cali"? Is it to show off a degree of familiarity? Affection? A degree of mastery? Are they compensating for a certain lack of confidence by infantilizing the name? Why don't people say, Texasy? Ohioy? Australia-ee, Denmarky, U.K.-ey, or New Yorky (Nyorky?)? Is it just to shorten a name? I think not. How come motorcyclist refer to the motorcycle products of the Yamaha company as "Yammies", but the concert pianists are never heard to say "My piano? Oh, I only play a Yammy". Why don't Honda motorcyclists refer to "my Hondi"? Incidentally, Harley, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Guzzi riders get a full pass on this post. Beemer owners, I'll get to you in a subsequent post. How come we all play the "Tele", but nobody plays the "Strati"? Or the "Pauli", or the 335-ee, the Jaguary, or the Jazzmastery? Can anybody explain? How Come?
