It was designed as a neck pickup, supposedly for a brighter sound than the p90 to better match the actual pickups Les was using in his personal guitars. Those pickups were Les's hand wound dynasonics as seen below:

What is a “staple” pickup?
Here, look at Jerry's guitar.neck pickup, it was known ( by Gibson) as the 'alnico V' pickup, I think.

Hi Scott!

I put one (a set actually) on a 56 LP reissue.
Both were Seymour Duncan CS pickups.
One was RWRP, so in the middle (both) selector position was hum cancelling.
Both pickups sounded great, the bridge pickup was brighter, and louder (IMO) than a P90.
I LOVE staple pickups in the neck position.
Alas, I have decided to completely give up on single coils pickups.
If you opt to put them in a guitar routed for P90’s, you will probably need to deepen the pickup cavity.

The gold top and I parted company.
My friend Tim now rocks it.

Band mate of mine had a black beauty with staples.
Fat as all get out. The P90 older brother.
Loved his bridge sound.

Just in the neck, though, probably, right? I've never seen one with staples in both positions.

p.s. P-90, born 1946. Staple, born 1954.

Lions & Tigers oh Mi !
.

Completely adjustable magnets for each string .... And no one ever adjusts them.

Flat poles across the pickup. Pickup flat to the body. The only EQ is mid-scoop from the bridge saddle radius.

All that design work to make adjustable parts ... and no one uses it. But they will swap pickups with a sliver of forum encouragement.

Kinda humorous in a way.
