Great bands, great names: Dire Straits, Joy Division, Eurythmics, Tragically Hip, The Animals, Blue Rodeo, Lighthouse, Los Lobos, 54-40, Bill Haley and the Comets.

How many names do you want?

I disagree with your categorizations on these.

what did people in the US think about the name .. "America" ..when the band hit the scene?....

big call to name your band after a country as large and varied as America....

    Best band names ever.

Murder by Death - imagine an even darker Johnny Cash. A friend is the drummer. I'll be sound provider for them again in December.

Bar Brawl III - a three piece Rockabilly band. My hometown schoolmates were the band. Made a decent run touring and playing.

Pretty Girls Make Graves- I've always wondered if they named themselves after a song of the same name by Dada.

Werewolf with a Shotgun - an Indianapolis based band playing cowpunk and rebel Rockabilly.

I always though Creedence Clearwater Revival was a
great band with a dumb name.
    Apparently, I'm wrong.
My winner in the bad band/bad name is the Cowboy Junkies.
Just my opinion, but "no me gusta!"

CCR is a great name, as is Cowboy Junkies, who are also a good band.

All of this is true in my world - your world may vary ;-)

The name is Grand Funk Railroad, which I always thought was kind of odd, until I heard about the Grand Trunk Railroad. After that, I thought it was pretty clever.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Mojo Nixon and the Horny Toadliquors.

or The Misfits, Minor Threat or Fugazi.

I have an album by a band called Pinky Tuscadero's White Knuckle... oh I guess I can't post the last word here...

Yeah you lost me when you put Talking Heads in the 'horrible bands' category.
