NRBQ, a great band with a great name, way ahead of the wave of rap groups and so on (NWA, whatever...) with letters as a name. (Yeah, I know what NRBQ stands for..)
Also, I play in a band that is pretty good on some nights, pretty bad on others, but has a great name - 3FI (Three Fine Individuals, Three Future Invalids, but mostly Three F^@%ing Idiots)...okay, then...

Some of the bands John Peel used to feature on his radio show had great names. Not always such great bands. My recollection of his show was that the real gems were hidden amongst some real dross.

In terms of names I particulalry remember 3 Mustaphas 3 and Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry. Don't recall the music particularly so probably in category 2....

Good band, good names mostly from my college days and not necessarily from JP: The Fall, Violet Femmes, the Cure, Joy Division, Supergrass, Camper Van Beethoven....

Don't know much about their music but kind of love their name.

Yeah, I was sort of separating the name from the success of the band. If you took the name on its own, I would associate with some crappy high school garage band.

Yeah I though it sounded cool too, so I got an album, not for me I'm afraid.

Not too fussed on band names, I don't take too much notice one way or the other, I did think Richmond Fontaine was a guy until I went to see them live, so I kinda like that one.

I nominate Tame Impala for great band, bad name.

Also, The Beatles is a pretty bad name, really. We're just so used to it. Just a corny pun.

Def Leppard is another really bad name IMO. It just screams "Led Zeppelin was already taken." and the word "deaf" doesn't bode well for musicians.

My favorites were always The Who & The Band. doesn't hurt that they're both great bands.

Oh, and I think Dead Kennedys just couldn't have been called anything else.

Although they're just about my favorite band, I never thought the Pixies' name fit their music very well. It sounds demure, almost twee, when actually they're anything but.
