That's too simple, you are forthwith barred from buying guitars, it's obvious you don't know the first thing about buying a guitar, nor tone woods, pickups, nor the influence of passing gas has on all of them.

Sheesh, and he thinks he's right!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'm the one whose right!:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Please be careful what you say about William. I understand that he can be a very sensitive fella. Plus, your chastising comments could have an adverse effect on his bagpipe playing. So, stop it!:D

Unfortunately, there is no power in the universe that can dissuade Mr. Tele from his bagpipe playing obsession, nor keep him from wearing women's skirts and pretending they are kilts. (it would be nice if he would at least wear underwear) The cowboy boots though, cowboy boots and a pretend kilt? o_Oo_Oo_O:lol:

    TD and Stringbanger:

    1. I'm not sensitive
    2. I don't wear a kilt. It's a skirt.
    3. It's not "whose"...it's who's

"So, there you have it. The definitive answer. Or not. My take-away is this: if you believe you hear a difference, then there is a difference."

I like it! It jells well with my mantra: "Tonewood species makes a significant difference in tone...to some people."

Both statements seem unarguable to me...thanks!

None of this has actually addressed the OP's initial question. To paraphrase: if only the pickups and strings matter, why is there a difference in sound between hollow/semi-hollow and solid body guitars. Having hollow/semi hollow and solid guitars using the same string brand/gauge and pickups, I know that there is a quite significant difference. To reiterate the question, why?

I'm glad you've finally reached the point that you can stop pretending it's a kilt, and just admit it. I'm sure your wife doesn't like her things paraded about, especially by a guy playing bagpipes and wearing cowboy boots. You married up didn't you? :D

I was only able to make such an observation because I did the same thing. Sort of a it takes one to know one thing!

Well, that question can't be answered because it starts with a false premise ... it presumes "if only the pickups and strings matter", but, since demonstrably, many things "matter" to electric guitar tone besides strings and pickups, any response would be equally false. Furthermore, there is a logical fallacy involved: "If nothing else matters ... what else matters (what else is causing the difference in sound)? If we accept that nothing else matters besides strings and pickups, there is no answer that respects that axiom, because we've established that nothing else matters.

The question should be rephrased, maybe thus: "It's been claimed that the sound of an electric guitar is produced by nothing more than the strings and pickups ... but, solid body and semi-hollows sound much different, even with the same pickups and strings. There must be something else affecting the tone ... what could that be?"

The answers include wood, hardware, electronics, string length, body shape, body mass, and probably a dozen other variables I haven't thought of. Zepfan hit on most of the answer in this post:

Oh I agree 100%. But the initial question remains. It is obviously based on a false premise (in my opinion), yet we continue to have people argue that the tone is, indeed, a function of only the strings, pickups and amp.

I've never cared to debate this topic. I've always bought and played guitars that sound and play good. Whatever they are made of. That said, I have a 90's American tele that I traded something for 15 yrs ago. I've never played the guitar much because it doesn't sound good. I've put 5-6 sets of great pups in it and just never really said play me! All that said a few months ago I decided to strip it down. I stripped the poly, color and the god awfulist sealer or under coat I've ever encountered.
Once done I stained and lightly laqured her. The difference in that guitar is night and day. You could be deaf and hear the difference. I think all things combined make a difference. Imo. [IMG]
