Just an observation, but a couple of things I've found have not gone up appreciably over the decades: string sets and drum heads.

Man strings were expensive. No wonder I never changed mine in the 80s. I remember also getting creative, and using an old used B string for an E or a D for an A, after a break during a gig or practice.
