This gets discussed every year or two in my circle. If they did a modern feature length film based on the TV show “Hogan’s Heros”, who would be in the cast?

Oh sorry OP, I missed the “this gets discussed yearly among my crowd“ part.

We discuss a lot but somehow a HH redo casting session never comes up !

I don’t think I could ever watch hogans heroes again with my mind not immediately going to the movie Auto Focus ...

I don’t think that TV show could be made today. The “cancel culture” would shut it down—even though one of the stars of the original series (Werner Klemperer) and his family had to escape what was happening in his native country for ethnic and religious reasons.

When he agreed to play the part, he said, “As long as Klink and his party never wins, I’ll do it.” (Paraphrased)

It was a strange concept—a comedy about one of the worst periods in history...but it wasn’t unique—the British show “Allo Allo” was set in the same period (more about the French Resistance), a specific Carol Burnett episode, and it was even used as a comedic trope in an episode of “Fawlty Towers.” There’s others as well—even the recent movie Jo Jo Rabbit.

A lot of people have lost the ability to laugh at darkness and evil—which gives darkness and evil even more power than it already had.

I usually cast Bruce Willis as Colonel Klink and John Goodman as Sergeant Schultz.

Did you see Auto Focus? They kind of recast the series for the movie. I liked a few of the actors in that film and their Hogan's Heroes scenes were pretty decent. Granted it was a movie, it kind of allows one to visualize different people in the roles. Bob Crane's story is a wild one.

Some of the best shows couldn't be remade today without a heavy sanitizing.

Watching old reruns of the Jefferson's and All in the Family had me convinced they would never be able to do it again. The other year they did a live taping... Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker and Jamie Foxx as George Jefferson. It was funny, same spirit, and the live element added some comic moments.

Not the same but same spirit.

I often fantasize about a MASH remake with Adam Scott as Hawkeye and Will Ferrell as Trapper purely based on looks alone. The two of them have good chemistry too.

What other shows have people imagined recasting?? Lol

    An actual 1990 show.

    1 episode aired then - kaput !

The fact that this was made isn’t the craziest thing .

The craziest thing is somewhere there are 10 more episodes in the can !

If done by Hollywood today, it would likely have the same “feel” as “Inglorious Basterds”.

@RollingBender 's "Inglorious Bastards" gives me the idea of George Clooney as Bob Crane would be a great fit and obvious Star of the show.

Not sure, but since you are a fan of the show, a little trivia for you.

Who was the second in command behind Hogan? I love this trivia question and it often stumps even the best fans.

Also remember that WWII vets were as young as early forties when the show originally aired. My grandfather loved the show, and he served in the European Theater.
