This morning, while parked to do some 'catch up' log and paperwork details after dumping 110 gallons of '$5 per' #2 Diesel into my bus (only a little over half it's total capacity, mind you. It would now cost something over $1000 to truly top this bus up if it was very low on fuel), I noticed the Pennington County Sheriff Department's prisoner shuttle bus sitting in a remote part of the Coffee Cup Travel Stop lot at I-90 and SD hwy 83.

It appeared that it may have been a planned rendevous to deliver lunch meals to those on board, as they were transferring bags of something from a pickup onto the bus.

This Sheriff's Department bus runs weekly between the 'state pen' in Sioux Falls and the Pennington County Jail 350 miles to the west.

Maybe I could get a 'gig' driving that bus? It undoubtedly pays a heck of a lot better than the feeble-ass company that I've been with for almost seven years now. I wouldn't know what to do with things like overtime, paid vacation, sick pay, insurance, things like that....and just imagine the lucrative side-business I could run selling screwdriver shivs, zip guns, and cigarettes to those guys!

Meh, maybe it's not such a good idea....but still.....

I'd watch the American Dad episode where Roger is a prisoner on a bus before I'd sign the papers.

It is actually a pretty good gig.

There was a private company that did transfers across State line between Nebraska and South Dakota back when I worked for the prison system. They only had to drive 12 miles round trip and the money was incredible. A couple of retired Sheriffs started the business after spending years writing the checks to another company.

I thought about going to work for them as I had been a "chaser" with the Marines and was the de facto escort for prisoner transports (court dates, medicals, funerals, etc.) out of the prison in my State after I ran down an escaping inmate. I was an avid marathoner those years and after the chase / capture, a legend started that I was super fast and often won marathons including NYC. Nothing was farther from the truth as I has a mid-pack finisher at best, but that is how legends start. Even the US Marshalls used to request me to go along with some escorts, they would tell the inmate that there was no chance of getting away from "running man" as they pointed to me. I was in good shape, but I was slow...thankfully nobody ever tested me.

But all that overtime money would go towards your bail and a free vacation in the Pennington County Jail.

I see a lot of those SWART mini buses and a lot of unmarked white greyhound busses leaving here daily. Don't know where they're going (well maybe 7 of them) but there sure is a steady stream and someone is driving them.

I prefer Streetcars. You pretty much know where they're going right from the get go.

Zip guns? Wonder how many of the current generation of criminal scum even knows what a zip gun is. There are so many handy dandy little "sub-compact nines" out there now that you could probably keister one with minimal pain. Still, I bet Cornpop had one back in the day. He was, after all, "a bad dude." Much badder than his cousin Cornpoop, whose nickname stemmed from an unfortunate outhouse incident. 🌽💩
