I've gotten some love here for posting my gear history vids so here's the newest research project. I've always wanted to know more about the history of how the Les Paul model originated, what features denote the different time periods, why "my 1966 Les Paul" is a joke, that sort of thing. This video is a result of all that research (and now I get the joke.)

This is my version of what shaped the models development. I'm sure you'll have your own opinions, and hope you'll share them. After all its a forum right? Thanks in advance for letting me know what you think (for good or ill, all welcome).

    Keith

    Another great video documentary.

One thing though......When he mentioned Mick Ralphs of Mott the Hoople the picture shown was Luther Grosvenor aka Ariel Bender formerly of Spooky Tooth.

Ah man! Really! But he playing a junior. The "costumes" distracted me.

It is not often that I'll watch a spoken word video longer than a few minutes these days, but the time flew by, I was fascinated.

You really need to do more research, I hear old lore instead of facts for some of the content. You certainly didn't read "Kalamazoo Girls" about war time Gibson production. It's hard to get it right, but that doesn't mean it's OK to get it wrong.

I'm sure there is so much more to know but the Kalamazoo Girls wasn't really in the scope of the video as it all happened before the Les Paul started. I don't mean to pretend to be an industry scholar. I'm just a guitar player doing research projects and sharing what strikes me.

I really appreciate folks taking the time to help me along with my knowledge.

    Thanks for watching.

    That's True!

I luckily saw Mott with Luther during their American Tour. The guest act was Queen on their first American tour!

Just for the record, the first bursts were not humbucker guitars. Here's a picture of one. Steve Miller also had one in the late '60's. I saw it in a picture of him playing it in Rolling Stone Magazine. There is always something unexpected when you're dealing with vintage Gibson's.

Interesting. Were these refins or custom ordered guitars do you think? And yes, even at 38 mins what I did was in no way all inclusive. That is one of the joys of guitar history. There are always wonderful exceptions to what we've been told.
