Welllll, ive only payed in bands ive had a hand in forming or solo gigs….but i can now say hired gun to my resume…..i went to an open mic nite a few weeks ago….and had a lot of fun, got along great with the guys house band running it so i went back the following week and had even more fun with him and a couple that came to play…so he paired me with himself and these two other guys and we rocked the joint……so a week later the guy contacts me to ask if i would like to join the house band as the other guitarist decided to quit…….im retired with lots of time and no commitments other than my regular band so i said sure…..all i have to do is show up with my guitar…amps are already there….EZPZ….plus a little cash….

    cheers.

That's all I've been doing post-lockdown. When things got dicey last year I gave notice to all the bands I was working with that I was out so I had a clean slate once things started opening up again.

I actually prefer it to being committed to a band! I've been working just about every weekend all summer, but the nice part is if there's something that my wife and I want to do on a weekend I can just tell everybody that I'm not taking any gigs for the day or days in question. I only commit to a gig when I want to. That's pretty cool.

My only gripe with being a hired gun is when they hand you money it seems to be a little light. Basically why I've been doing my own thing for 20 years now. A bit better money and the rest of the band seems content.

A lot of folks have been re-assessing their future options, over the last couple of years. Plenty of time, between gigs, in many places.

If you're freelancing for the $$, it's not ideal. But if you're in it for the fun, it's perfect: no hassles with lining up gigs, dealing with club owners, etc. Just show up, guitar in hand.

I’ve played for $ and sometimes made good $ but am not a true band guy because I do too much other stuff + my real income was elsewhere. That kind of setup would be cool to me but I’d run into my typical obstacle: I only want to do it from late December through February because outside of that I’m “committed”…to the cottage, spring fishing, hunting etc etc.

It would be fun to be a "hired gun," but my gun ain't got no bullets!:(

I’ve been a hired gun for most of my (almost) 50 year career.
    It works for me.
It’s rarely boring, usually fun, often pays;), and it keeps me learning new things.
Congratulations on joining a fairly elite club!
Not everyone can, or will do it.
