I'm just two or three years from retirement. About five years ago, I picked the guitar back up after taking a 35 year break to raise a family. I try to practice at least an hour a day. I know I need more practice time, but my old hands just won't cooperate. I would love a custom shop Strat or Tele but that's where my budget doesn't cooperate. I have a collection of Tele and Strat part casters, building my 5th one now. I've become a pretty decent DIY luthier, having taught myself soldering, re-fretting, fret leveling and dressing, truss rod adjustment, and nut shaping. To be honest, I'm much better at building guitars than playing them. When I play, I annoy the neighbors but entertain myself.
I've always loved guitars and music made on the guitar. From Chet Atkins to Frank Zappa, if a player has talent, they have my attention. I've been blessed with the opportunity to sit with maybe a dozen other people to watch Chet Atkins deliver a guitar class at a local community college. I also sat with a couple thousand to see Beck, Blackmore, Clapton, Page, Santana, Townsend, Skunk Baxter, Buddy Guy, Gary Moore, Muddy Waters, Brain May, Prince, Strunz & Farah, EVH, Keith Richards, Freddie, BB, & Albert King, Gilmore, SRV, Satriani, Vai and Zappa. Six thousand years of civilized human history and I was lucky enough to have lived in a time to see these legends play live. I can proudly say: "I may be old, but I got to see all the cool bands".
