Maybe this is because of the slight difference between "Dutch" an "Deutsch", the latter meaning "German" in German.
Yeah. It's kind of a weird term because Dutch people (from the Netherlands) don't use anything like it to describe themselves. It's kind of a dumb and confusing word IMO.

Welcome aboard from another stateside member. … So .... I'm assuming, (because of your musical tastes), that Holland must be situated closer to Tennessee.
Hahaha, I’m afraid not… I don’t really know what is hot music-wise here. Metal not so much, there are Dutch musicians who make the “standard” Top-40 music, singers who sing the “levenslied”, something difficult to translate, “songs of life”(?) in Dutch about life, love, whiny-whiny about being left by their girlfriends… I hate don’t really like that type of music. I’m not the standard to measure what is popular around here. When I was 15 I already was only interested in ‘50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll when all my classmates were into the regular ‘80’s music. And the band Doe Maar… Dutch texts with a reggae-like backing…

Funny enough I’m not into country either… Especially not when they incorporate fiddles. But you can wake me up for Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry etc.!

Does that sentence even make sense? Hahah :D
And German in Dutch is: Duits, with the “ui” being pronounced as in “guy”.

Funny, i saw your post minutes before i was getting ready to watch the weekly youtube videos from a dutchie who travels the world on a motorcycle thru super remote areas and calls herself "itchy boots". Real name being Noraly Schoenmaker. She has i think about 2 million subscribers and lives off their paid subscriptions that finance her travels ! Amazing determination and toughness, so much respect for you dutchies assuming they share the same grit as her. Welcome to the forum in any case.

As far as I've been able to gather, virtually every American usage of 'Dutch' actually references something German, rather than from the Netherlands.
Every American I know including myself uses Dutch to refer to the Netherlands (at least the ones smart enough to care about geography and the world around them)

When referring to the “Pennsylvanian Dutch” we are referring to the Amish that are of Germanic origin

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. Nowadays the usage is always in reference to the Netherlands. But whenever it is used historically it seems to always refer to something German instead, such as the Pennsylvania Dutch, the lost Dutchman's mine, etc.

"Dutchman" was a common American term for a German ("Dutch" being the English cognate to the German demonym "Deutsch", and not a reference to the Dutch people).

Unfortunately, many early Americans were incredibly lazy WRT using their version of words and names that already existed.
