I'm cruising Sweetwater, reading speaker reviews, cause I'm in the market for a pair of higher-power 12s... and I see this.

    I'm like... THAT's @4pickupguy !!!

I can't decide between a pair of Celestion Redbacks, or Creambacks. It's for my old Roland JC-120, which I care nothing about trying to recreate the tone of the original speakers (which are long gone).

Maybe he's a Bill Kirchen fan and took it from Commander Cody and His Lost Plant Airmen. However, that Tele does look a little alien:)

I’m not sure why, but it was the neighbors that started calling me 4pickupguy. I had to shimmy two more pickups in my tele to avoid having to cleanup my backyard.... technically, two of those “pickups” are half tracks,... idiots... (>_<)

    Two Redack warnings.
    1. The break in period is really long.
    2. That will make for an exceptionally heavy, exceptionally loud clean amp! God help you loading out!! These things are EVM-12L heavy!!
    3. It would sound great as, once they are broke in, they have a nice bottom end thump that would probably benefit a JC120. I roll the bass knob to 2 on my Deluxe. The low end although possibly on the high side, is tight and thumpy, not flubby, which makes it tame-able, musical.
    4. You would never ever ever ever hurt two of these with a JC-120.
    5. They sound (and weigh) like the deep cone Gauss EGS speakers.

    1. Cream backs sound great in a BF Fender or Marshall, they might sound a bit thin in a JC-120.
    2. lighter at the end of the night.
    3. Much shorter break-in period.

My choice for a JC-120 would be the Redbacks.

So would you say that the Redbacks are certainly in the Greenback family with regard to midrange response, but a tighter, more pronounced bass, and of course much longer before breakup?

My clean tone playing is not a whole lot different that yours. I sort of go for a Eric Johnson thing for clean playing. And I rarely use the chorus in the JC120. When I do use chorus, I use just a dash of an old Maxon chorus. And I use a lot of delay. I will rarely if ever put any OD pedal in front of the 120. Occasionally I use an old Fulltone Fatboost in front of it... but I think that’s because of the crappy speakers that are in it now.

I was looking for a Redback vs Creamback shootout but this is as close as I could find that shows the mid punch I was talking about. You’ll have to judge whether or not it would benefit your amp. Plenty of videos out there about breaking them in,so, it ain’t just me saying it. they take forever. Most common method is pink noise and time...
Shredders must like the red back because most videos are metal players trying to emulate a kazoo hooked to a dragster muffler. No clean playing.

Remember you can always blend speakers in an amp too..
