I want to buy a Telecaster but don't know which one to choose: a new Fender Player Telecaster or a secondhand Fender '50 Baja Telecaster. Which one is 'better'?

Both are great, but New Players is bang for the buck. Try out both, for colour options a Player series

The one that makes you feel happy when you hold it in your hands. That might be different for you than for me. Both are good, and both are 'better' than the other (depending on personal preferences)...

    I'd go for the Baja.

I would go Player, you can always mod later if you want a four way and an S1 switch. The Player pickups are as good as any Classic series I've heard. At the end of the day, it's your call.

Go play as many as you can. Buy the one that you bond with immediately, and buy it immediately, before someone else does.

    There, fixed it for you.;):D

Subjectively speaking the Player Tele is better - for me.

As several have said - there is no substitute for playing them both. For me the Player is better - I don't like the Baja neck at all. But neck size comes down to personal preference.

I'd pick the Baja. It's good enough to be your main guitar for a very long time. The wiring setup is immensely versatile and the pickups are fantastic.

I own a Fender American Elite, and have just ordered a prewired baja control plate to swap out as a much desired upgrade.

Some people may suggest to get the cheaper one and upgrade later..... with the Baja you won't have to.
