This is myth. Cats can learn to recognize and obey many different commands and a fairly large non-command vocabulary.

Agree. It's just they choose to ignore. Pretty good racket actually.

Mine don't ignore. They are all better trained than my sister's Corgi, even after she has spent a couple of thousand bucks having it in obedience schools. The dog is otherwise quite smart, it simply refuses to "obey".

Mine don't ignore you. They are very obedient and communicative. My sister's corgi, on the other hand, is uncontrollable, even after several thousand dollars spent on obedience training.

    I thought this

A cat can be chased away from its home and hide under a bush till it nearly starves, and it is a bit of a factory reset for the territory memory

I'd check with a vet if it is chipped

If I kept it I might call it silver

I like to wait a while to understand their personality and then suit the name to that

My last cat turned out to be like an old fat guy who asked for triple portions at the buffet and hurried for NO ONE, so I called him Ernie. Spot on for how he acted

If the cat has been declawed then it needs new owners - and you sound like just the right sort of person to do this. The name finds the cat.

Our two cat dogs come when you whistle and the big black Mook runs to the back door when I say “Dude - we gotta go in.”

And that’s when Ive been sitting next to him way in the back of the yard for an hour. And it’s not treat based either.

I agree with seeing if she’s chipped. There could a legitimate reason for being at your door.....or not
Don’t rush into her name just yet unless she has some trait that screams her name

Jackie had a young cat adopt her so she brought her home. Unfortunately she didn’t fit into the household (her call) so she went to the shelter and was adopted in a couple of days

She was found at Altoona Lagoon so her name became Altoona

I’ve got a picture of her somewhere. I’ll post it when I find it

She needs a 100% inside home.

Unless she gets that, the name won't even matter.

Very true. We had a cat called Jess. We used to have arguments - she usually won.
If I wanted her to stop doing something, like eating the sofa, I would just point a finger...and she stopped.
But if she was being really cheeky, I would shout 'get to bed', and she would run off to our bedroom, jump on the bed & curl up in the centre.
It took her about 5 seconds.

I respect people that protect cats indoors. My cat are in/out cats and I couldn't have cats any other way. Around 5 years ago I wen't through about 3 months where the cats were definitely kept inside. Other than that 3 month period I've lived in a great cat place. Fenced in, and the cats just know about the road and they never cross the gate boundary. They know cars are danger and they're happy in their space.
Elly is 17, Lucy is 14, so I have cats that don't wander.

It comes down to quality of life and I believe cats need connection with nature, and without it they can become pretty psycho weird.
