This is a band that my band used to play with, don't have a way to contact the guitar player anymore, but I've been thinking about his tone on this song for 12 years. Lol

Here is the song, skip to 3:27.

I remember he played an ibanez semi-hollow, and I want to say an AC30 but I could be wrong about that part. But that tone! Is that a fuzz? It's so thick but not too bassy, articulate, heavy but airy. I want it.

    What do you think?

Sounds to me like clean blended with overdrive. Very nice sound. Wounded Paw made a pedal that will blend clean with an fx chain. I think I could get close to that with my modded DS1 and a blender. Voodoo lab tried this with their sparkle drive, but I always felt their distortion was a bit too harsh.( Have always intended to mod mine, but haven't gotten around to it).
Not really a lot of distortion.

I always felt "less is more" in this situation.

To me it just sounds like a cranked amp. I think it's more about playing style th n gear. You're overthinking this.

IMO... sounds like a Tube Screamer to me at that point in the song. I hear the "blend" (see below) and the classic mid hump on that lead.

Exactly what a "real" TS does. It's a blend of effect and natural signal which allows the natural tone of the amp to shine through. In this case.... likely that cleaner sound we hear at the very beginning.

I sound like a broken record... but that is what a Tube Screamer does to tone - when properly set up. Leads JUMP out of the mix with extreme clarity!

Warning: A TS does not sound very good at bedroom levels.... on stages and in studio's at higher volumes it shines.

Disclaimer: There are more than one ways to get that tone, I'm just pointing out what I believe I hear, and the exact effect I would use to get there.

Well, turns out he was using a Boss blues driver and an OD2 at the time.
