I don't think the neck plate spacer is original.

I mean... the serial number checks out as a 78, but basically everything else could be non-original, right? It looks like a nice piece of ash.

How's it play? What kind of money are you looking at dropping?

    refinished poorly

Looks like 'real' 78 but not 'original' ... wrong neck plate and crapy refinish.

Sticker looks a little suspect Tele trademark dot falling off edge (to much sanding?), and wavey serial number.

Can't realy tell though, need better pictures.

    yes it does

If it plays ok, speaks to you, and the price is right, who cares ~ buy play be happy...
unless your just trying to flip it.

I'll agree with most of the posts - it looks legit from the photos, but with a bad refinish on the body (at least). A couple of points:

Fender used the "S8xxxxx" serial numbers on Teles from 1978 (maybe even late 1977) though 1982. Since I'm not seeing any date stamps (which isn't a red flag - they often forgot to stamp them) it could be from anywhere in that era.

The neck plate and the plastic space are correct for that point in time - my '79 Lead II (bought new in November '79) had the same plate and the same spacer. Fender evidently used the spacer from some time in the middle 1970s (circa 1974-75) on the 4-bolt neck models ("regular" Tele, Lead series, etc.) until all those were discontinued at the end of 1982/start of 1983 - excluding the AVRIs which first came out in 1982. When the "revised" non-reissue models came out in 1983 (with the 4-bolt/micro-tilt neck) did not have the spacer.
