Heard the song a zillion times but never questioned . . .

I'm not meaning to be sacrilegious--it's a great performance and Jersey boy Maury Meuhleisen is top-notch--but I'm not certain that the lyrics make sense:

Like the pine trees lining the winding road, I've got a name, I've got a name
Like the singing bird and the croaking toad, I've got a name, I've got a name

Pine trees don't have names other than their species name. Shouldn't it be: "Unlike pine trees lining a winding road, I've got a name, I've got a name." Or am I missing something?

Don't feel alone. I have thought the pine tree thing was a bit stupid since the song came out. Birds and frogs I kind of get, but a pine tree? Really. You are not alone.

Question….what do you call a pine tree? I know a botanist would use the scientific Latin name, but common folk use the common NAME.

Dunno. They make enough sense to me. We have a name for pine trees: pine tree. And a name for birds and toads: bird and toad.

What I don't get is "Doctor, doctor, gimme the news, I got bad case of loving you." Why do we need a love song to a doctor?

=O.

Wait, did somebody mention Ardbeg?
Yeah, I tried the Wee Beastie. It was on sale. It is a bit too wee. Actually, the 10 is a bit too single-note for me. But the Uigeadail, on the other hand, is one of my all-time favs.

Tammy was a huge hit for Debbie Reynolds when I was a wee one, with this opening verse:

I hear the cottonwoods whisperin' above
Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love
The old hootie owl hootie-hoos to the dove
Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love

And Bernie Taupin contributed this:

Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad

Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

Obviously, most of us are hackers when writing lyrics. If we'd be more imaginative in our nature imagery, we could have hits.

You have to listen to all of the lyrics. And understand simile.
Yeah, respectfully, I'm still not sold. I thought it was a sneakily rebellious anthem about a young guy's commitment to his individualism. The writer vows to live out his dreams--unlike his father who kept his dreams buried--and whether it brings success or failure, he's not going to let life pass him by. It's kind of like Springsteen's "Factory" and other songs off "Darkness." He doesn't want to be a nameless, forgotten guy who unhappily toils his life away or a nameless pine tree lining a winding road. But I could be completely wrong.

P.S. Thanks for the Corryvreckan tip.

PS -

You're right. Can we live with it? I write a lot of songs. Most of them don't make literal sense. Folks still seem to like 'em. But not as much as they like Croce's.

I want a gig with this imaginary band too, even if it's just as the 2nd electric tambourine player.
The Scots Pine's genus is "Pinus Sylvestris" so I'm claiming Sylvester MacPine as my stage name.
Maine is the Pine Tree State, and a friend had a band called the Pinetones. Everyone in the band had to have a tree name. He has curly hair, so he called himself Curly Maple.

If I'd been in it, I would've been Blues Bruce.
