Launching into a song out of tune looks (and sounds) far more stupid and unprofessional IMO.

Most small clips ons can hide behind the headstock.

I thought it was black socks and sandals that made people look like dorks, at least that's what my wife tells me, I think I look pretty cool.

I wouldn’t say unprofessional but one of the things that looks way more novice to me is playing your guitar low enough that you’re bending your wrist. I mean, I don’t pass judgment on people that can play like this, and many guys can (look at nels cline for instance). But when I see some guy struggling with his guitar and his left hand wrist is all contorted it’s like, what are you doing man? Why are you making your life so difficult?

In my past country and folk bands I've used a clip-on. There was very little stage noise and I used no pedals and didn't want to bring one.
In electric bands I like the little Polytune.
    The aesthetics of clip-ons don't bother me, it's just a tool. I don't give it a thought when I'm watching a band.

My feet are fugly, so I'd actually look like less of a dork if I wore black socks with sandals than if people saw my feet.

I don't know, but Red Hot Chili Peppers played concerts wearing nothing except tube socks over their sweaty, swingin' man-sausages. But they at least had the decency to not use clip-on tuners.

I always liked having my guitar down low, like Jimmy Page, because it looked cool. The downside is that it's nearly impossible to play efficiently. So what I've discovered recently, and it looks almost as cool, is to have the guitar body sort of low, but with the headstock angled upward a bit more steeply. That allows you to easily and efficiently reach all the frets, and still have the guitar body low enough to cover your crotch. That's important for me, because I've always been a chick-magnet and I'm seriously tired of being visualized as a sex object.

Glad I'm not alone at least. I never like seeing a nice carved, finished, wooden instrument with a $20 piece of plastic sticking off the end. Just looks wrong to me (and it even bothers me the artist doesn't see it as detracting).

The mini D'Addario one is pretty unobtrusive, showing only a small black tab in front of the headstock. That's what I use if I don't have the pedal board.

    "Stupid and unprofessional."

If Eric Clapp had used these on his guitar in the 60s, there'd be no hatred for these things. They'd be "cool" and professional.

I did this with the little Daddario tuners that originally clip on. A little modification (cut the clip off) and two screws and they work great.

And if drilling two little screw holes in the back of a headstock gives you a heart attack, you should already be dead because a typical Tele neck and body already have a total of somewhere around 40 holes drilled in the wood.

Okay, if you want the math:

    Neck...
6 holes for the tuner posts
7 little screw holes for the tuners
1 hole for the string tree
1 hole the the truss rod adjuster
4 holes for the neck screws
    --19 total for the neck

    Body...
4 holes for the neck plate
2 holes for the strap buttons
    5 holes for the pickguard
Oh Martha it's adding up fast
    3 holes for the bridge
2 holes to mount the neck pickup
2 holes to mount the control plate
    Somebody call 911
1 hole for the string ground
1 hole for the bridge pickup's leads
1 hole for the neck pickup's leads
1 huge 7/8" hole for the jack cup
    --22 total for the body

    That's 41, and I probably forgot a few.

If you have an 8-hole pickguard, ER CODE BLUE! STAT!
