I don't care how you get in tune or what getting in tune looks like! Just please tune before you play!

Being the amateur that I am, I always remove my headstock tuner because I have this ridiculous notion that it degrades the resonance of my guitar. Irrational superstition, I know. Maybe it actually improves it. Anyway, I don't worry about this important issue at all because if I were a professional who played onstage, I believe I would tune my guitar before I got in front of an audience. I would keep my tuner handy (maybe clipped to a mic stand) if something were to go awry. I only contributed to this discussion because there wasn't a thread on the importance of eating fiber.

Maybe you should mention that to the London Symphony Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic or Elton John?

...ahh well...im more daft wit too...but can easily be tipped into a John Lydon style rant
day to day...im probably one of the most polite of people you could meet...doff hat and hold doors for people
get me on that stage..thats a different story...Psychotically terrifying but mesmerising and enthralling at same time to quote someone who watched us in full flight

I never trim my strings. Partly just because I like knowing who around me has OCD.

I went to see a band that a friend of mine was subbing for. The guitar player hits a big chord for Elvis' Love Me Tender. It was so far out I actually cringed. Instead of tuning, he kept right on going, playing the entire song horrendously out of tune. It was beyond awful.

As to the OP's point - I don't know about unprofessional, but I HATE the look of a tuner hanging off someone's headstock. Just one man's opinion.

I’ve never understood why people put them on facing front. I’ve got mine facing the back and angled toward me. You still got the clip but the tuner is behind the headstock.

I don't care if the guitar looks like the color of baby vomit

If it sounds, plays fantastic and is of sound construction-
    That's all that matters.

With paintings and such artistry in the visual mediums,
do we ask how they sound??

I like it when two guitars tune up live with their volume on 10, through the PA, that's really professional. Also many players that think they don't need a tuner and can do it by ear. They need a tuner.
