I'm not the biggest headstock tuner guy, I use a floor model myself, but I really don't think there is any "novice" element to them. Some of the best guitarists I know use them. If you head over to the Wildwood Guitars site, you'll see that Greg Koch uses them in many of the demo videos, and that guy is a beast!

I have a built-in tuner that displays on my internal HUD. Cyberdyne Systems thought of everything.

I remember Mark Agnesi ranted in one of his videos about people who leave clip-on tuners on... That was funny.

Re: capos ... just got this recommended on YT:

Yoinks! You just reminded me of something, from about twenty years ago.

While my mismatched socks are just because I don't care, I did actually rush once and not notice something. It was only when I returned home from my bicycle trip to the supermarket that I realised I was in my boxers...

Well on the one hand that's pretty bad, but on the other hand... at least you weren't going commando that day!

Yes, I agree, clip-on tuners and/or capos on head-stocks look horrendous.

Almost as ridiculous as not trimming your strings.

I keep mine on the top of my amp. In between songs, I clip on, tune up, 99% of the time, no strings are out of tune, I take off and put it back on my amp. I don't care if other people leave them clipped on, but I don't. I think it looks terrible. Think about it, we all love the look of our headstock. They are very specifically designed to have a certain look. The companies have gone through numerous sketches to get the perfect headstock and then to attach a tuner to it, it just looks bad.

Clip ons don’t bother me at all. Why add another pedal to your chain.
I see more and more pros with clips ons.
    Seriously, 12 pages?

This kinda thread is the reason I haven't visited or posted in the BDC in over two years.

The "oldmanism" is just too stinky up in here. Carry on.

The only purpose for this thread was so the OP could spell something 'not allowed' out in capital letters, I guess to slip one by the mods. He picked a topic that always gets these types of responses, knew it would go on for 12 pages or more.

"aRe the type that seems to suit me best. I had floor pedal tuners but as I got Older it became more difficult to see them, especially in the bright sunlight. Headstock tuNers are right there where I can see them, are quite Accurate"

That was a long time ago. These days they play wearing only clip on tuners on their man-sausages.

Love it! Our school group consisted initially of a mish mash of instruments, anyone who came along basically. They’d tune variously to a trumpet, tuba or anything. They’d all be in tune with each other but, one time when the music teacher wandered in with a couple of violinists, both tuned to a tuning fork, it sounded awful. The explanation, was, apparently, something to do with our lot having tuned to a cold trumpet that had then warmed up.

nothing worse than a cold trumpet...all that goo dripping out sticks to your tash
funny you should mention it actually...was just recanting my time playing a cornet (badly) in Lingdale Silver Band as a kid in another thread....how strange...i made them sound like the Shillingbury Blowers...chucked the cornet back at them...age 10..late 74...was already quite a proficient guitarist anyway so i never looked back

Most decent electro acoustics have built in tuners. Why not electrics? Just, say, the guts of a clip on inset into the back of the headstock. No one out front would see it and the player could tune up quickly.

Just seen BigDaddyLH’s earlier post. Is that tuner an add on or supplied fitted to the guitar?

one of our old drummers rang me today...he feels the same...we lost our sax player 2 yrs ago.....the drummer that rang me found him dead in his flat from O/D...he worries about people a bit much as consequence...went to get him for a gig...had to smash door in
we still played//had to,...we had already been paid but talk about heavy heart...missed him...not just because he was a great sax player..he was as mad as a baboon on brown ale...
old drummer mentioned getting band together...if we can find PuppyDogDave...our old bass player.
(Wulf and The Hound Dogs)..DaddyDogJohn..drums...MamaDogCharlie (rip) sax...he was a fusspot was charlie...like an old woman sometimes...hence nickname we gave him..perfectioninst...formally trained...looked like Gerry Mulligan with a quiff..
we shall return...like a mad Psychobilly phoenix rising from ashes of chaos
do you play sax?...vacancy if you do!
